There is a difference between putting GNOME on your workstations and enganging in a partnership with Ximian or Eazel. What these announcements is about is that companies like RedHat, Sun and HP will make the services provided by the company they partner with available to their customers.

Companies who do not make such an agreement with Eazel for instance will probably not install the Eazel services part of Nautilus just the basic filemanager.

I this it is fair to say that this is true for Redhat even if you don't count in Cygnus. Redhat was the company that pushed Linux and with it free software (incl. opensource) into the hands of a wider audience. Before Redhat the only people who used linux was students studying Computer Science and some developers.

It seems that Sun is willing to put a lot of resources into helping Linux become a success on the desktop. With the GPL'ing of StarOffice and Mozilla, the developers they are putting onto the GNOME project they are linning up to be the biggest backer of desktop Linux projects. Thanks Sun.

  9. RedHat back on track on What's Coming In Red Hat 7.0 · · Score: 1

I have used RedHat almost exclusivly since a started out with Linux. Yet the 6.x releases seemed to be very aimed at the server users with other distro's putting more effort into making their distro work nicely out of the box for desktop users. After running the beta and seeing what is to expect in the 7.0 release I think RedHat once agains gives priority to the desktop system. The added applications, GUI lilo, improved USB support, great hardware detection through Kudzu etc. I think RedHat is poised to once again be the undisputed leader also in the Linux desktop segment. Big kudos to RedHat and especially the guys at the RedHat Labs for their great work.

Galeon utilises the GNOME CORBA architecture too provide integration with GNOME transfer Manager. The use of GNOME has enabled Galeon to provide more extensive features than it otherwise would. Why people can't see that re-implementing fuctionality is more stupid and space consuming than many apps sharing one or more libraries providing this functionality is beyond me.

Errr...Galeon is a GNOME frontend for Mozilla, so removing both GNOME and Mozilla depency is naturally not a very brilliant idea. As for speed, I use Galon daily and it is very fast and slick. And as the optization work continues in Mozilla, things will only go faster.

  14. Interface looking childish? on Pre-KDE 2.0 Progress Report · · Score: 2

Might be that I am being judgemental being a long time GNOME user, but when looking at the screenshots, especially the one of the filemanager, the icons gave me a distinctly 'for kids' feeling. It is hard to explain the reasons, but I think the combination of a cartoonish look ('simplified' and big and very distinct colours) are probably part of the explanation for this impression. If this was done on purpose by KDE, I think it is a mistake. Non-techie users probably don't want to be given an interface which inidicates that they as users are on a 'kids' level.

  17. Re:This is unlikely on KDE And GNOME To Share Component Architectures? · · Score: 2

Licensing is not really an issue here, none of the shared technologies in question would need to link to Qt.
As for who would benefit the most, I think it is academic, the real winner would be the users and linux in general. If this thing works out choosing desktop environment would be very much like choosing a window-manger.

Rivyn has talked with a lot of KDE and GNOME developers about this, with mostly postive reactions. Duley is an ardent GNOME hater so I think that is why he downplays this so much.

That said, the contact is at a very preliminary stage so it is correct to say that things are more at like the start of a new mid-east process than very close to a solution.

What Rivyn is trying to do though is gather user support behind those developers on both sides that have a positive attitude towards the issue, in order to keep things moving.
