    People complain about Microsoft because they used closed proprietary non-standards software to cement a monopoly position that held back the industry for years. This is still causing problems now with the difficulty of ditching IE6/7/8 and XP and the fact that IE isn't compatible with their own software half the time. Google are nowhere near as bad.

    The OP was writing from the standpoint of never having worked in any reasonably sized organisation, where just buying new hardware doesn't magically make all the XP only software and hardware compatible and doesn't magically deal with all the support and retraining costs of a fundamentally different UI experience.

    An IDE is a tool, not a mindset. You can write as much or as little code as you like in an IDE and you don't have to spend time hunting around on Google for the specific API call that you've only used once in 5 years or spend a couple of hours trying to figure out what happened after you missed a curly brace out and your code threw a very obscure error.

    I copy the debugging symbols file to the web site directory, open up the equivalent source in Visual Studio, select the server it's running on and Attach to the process. Not exactly difficult and I didn't start the program from the IDE.
