  1. XP - Why not Vista? on Microsoft Takes On the OLPC · · Score: 3, Interesting

Hardware requirements? Need to dump old 'inventory' for a tax break? No compelling features?

  2. Re:South Korea on Why are Websites Still Forcing People to Use IE? · · Score: 1

No, but the people who BUY portables are that dominant. Its the same logic that MS used to get Win95 into business - it runs on people's home machines OK, and Mr PHB wants his work machine to be equally cool, so it is Declared that they'll switch over.

  4. Re:So few complaints? on Sony Fixes Problems With New DVDs · · Score: -1, Offtopic

  6. people are self-reporting anyway, so what? on Delete Cookies, Inflate Net Traffic Estimates · · Score: 1

So now instead of innocent webmasters naively listing more hit counts than they have, they'll just simply lie about their hitcounts to inflate the numbers.

  7. Paging Dr. House on Customers Treated as Culprits in Support Calls? · · Score: 5, Insightful

    EVERYONE LIES.

People drop their iPods and claim that they 'died'.
People hotplug drives that aren't hotplug and RMA them to Newegg.
People push GPOs to servers, then claim "I didn't change anything" to everyone else.

Combine this with the fact that on the other hand, the customers are frequently more knowledgeable than the front line support, and you're bound to have an antagonistic relationship. How many times have you called about a PC problem, and had to wade through the "ok, lets reboot in Safe Mode" or "please click Start, then Run, then "C M D -dot - E X E".... just to fix a farking bad video card?

  8. all your eggs in 1 basket on MS Giving Exploit Writers Clues To Flaws · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Who would put their DNS server / user repository on the same box, and expose it to the Internet? Oh wait, thats EXACTLY what MS wants you to do... its easier, and the nice Wizard helps you through all those pesky details.

No, digital sounds better. You may be confusing the analog/digital controversy with generally shitty-sounding modern recordings.

  10. Bad headline : DNS != Domain Name System on DNS Stressed From Financial Maneuverings · · Score: 4, Informative

  15. Re:Simple, cheap, easy solution on WEP Broken Even Worse · · Score: 1, Insightful

Wireless is NOT cheaper than cable. A wireless card for my PC was $29. To run wire, crimp the ends, drill through the floor, and install an outlet box would be more than that, just in parts. Scale it up to a few people in the house, and throw in an occasional laptop, and the cost of wiring becomes ridiculous.

Coming from a European, I suppose that your post is to be expected. However, your statement that "the poor go thirsty while the rich water their golf courses" is both ill-founded, and proves the counter to your arguments. A) you're assuming that "the poor" are in a metaphysical state, which cannot be changed, and is some sort of cosmic destiny (which is untrue) and secondly, a consequence is that because capitalism allows people to no longer be poor, they have the ability (perhaps not realized due to poltical or social forces) to stop being "the poor".

It flies in the face of YOUR ethics, however, you need to really question what values YOUR ethics rests on.
