I worked for Guardent for a while, and their coders were the elitist of the elite, if you listened to them. Then you read something like this to show what yutzes they were.

...Linux is no alternative to Windows for Joe and Jane Average Computer user. Using my parents as a gauge (because I consider them pretty average computer users), having them using Linux as an OS would make zero sense. They are much more familiar with Windows products.

How many times have we heard this from Microsoft? Why do people still reward this sort of behavior with continued purchases? If its going to kind of suck out of the box, and get better over time, and you can get support, why not use RedHat Linux or Solaris ?

Sorry, now that I have that out of my system, consider if anything MS produces truly uses protected memory. Or maybe it does, but then you install some nefarious software, and that runs as system, and it hacks your buzzord-compliant encryption, and your game, as they say, is over.

Watch for chairs. This is like the Sitefinder hackery, only much worse - its built into the app you're using. Rather than you choosing to use Google or some MS engine, MS has built your browser (and face it, IE _is_ the Intarweb for most people) to automatically use ITS search engine.

As far as the poor IE7 saps know, Microsoft IS Google.

Because Windows machines need to be rebooted all the time for bugfixes, application death, and patches, MS wants you to be able to run several instances of Windows on 1 piece of gear. A decent virtualization layer will allow you to migrate users from 1 instance to another, so you can bounce the instances one at a time. That being said, VMWare currently totally rocks at this, so MS has an uphill battle. One which they'll win, of course, because they have the mindshare and the Windrones will buy it.
