They may not care anyway, but its hard to take you seriously when you seemingly don't know who your congressman is and complain about them not listening. Maybe I missed something?

Sony and the RIAA are the same entity. I personally just think this is some way for Sony to try to get control of a new segment of the market. I would bet that this thing has plenty of DRM technology in it (or will be upgraded) that Sony is not telling us about.

Just a thought, but this device could be an entry for a pay-per-listen scheme that the RIAA would drool about.

If you're even remotely interested in boycotting the RIAA you should stay away from Sony.

There is a toolbox routine to turn off the menu bar. I've done it in a number of programs as far back as System 3.1 on mac 512k.

You're right about the single drive macs- they were unusable. Apple should have only sold dual drive units.

I don't think Apple started promising pre-emptive multitasking until at least 1992-93. It is sad that they didn't get it until 2000, but thats about the same wait for windows 3.1 to windowsXP (consumer pre-emptive). At any rate if you hated your 512k that much I'm sure you weren't still using it in '92...

Thats good information. It really proves the point though the space shuttle is a poor substitute for the saturn when trying to reach the moon. It sounds like it would take at least 6 shuttle trips to get everything up. This would be more expensive that a dedicated rocket like the saturn...

Although maybe if you sent enough fuel up you could send the shuttle to the moon with a lander in the payload section. The amount of fuel might be prohibitive. On the plus side though you get a bigger 'command module' thats capable of sustaining a crew for weeks (whats the longest flight- 17 days?), and more importantly you would only have to engineer the lander...

  14. Re:Excellent! on Russia Wants to Launch Manned Mission to Mars · · Score: 1

I don't have the numbers to back me up on this, but I've heard that the total cost of resources per flight is higher with the shuttle than it would be with disposible rockets. One piece of that is the fact that they need to be re-tiled periodically and that each individual tile is unique and must be duplicated by hand.

The saturn rockets are a special case since they are powerful enough to orbit the moon and return.

This is true, but you need more computing power than discrete transistors can provide with the weight/size/heat requirements. Integrated circuits were a necessity for the Apollo mission. Who knows how long it would have take for that extremely important advance if it wasn't for NASA and the Apollo mission.

Small nitpick- I usually agree with the stuff you write.

National Parks are one of the few types federally owned land that is reserved for 'nature' (and our enjoyment of it). Most other categories are for exploitation and always have been. National Forests exists to preserve and manage timber resources. I'm not so sure the purpose of other classes of land, but its almost always set aside to manage/exploit resources- not to keep them in pristine condition. The fact that cool places exists in National Forests is secondary to the fact that the government claims the rights to (and eventually will) log it. Not sure what explicit protection 'Wildlife Refuges' have, but I guarantee its less than a National Park.
