  3. Drop Shadows - choose a light source now guys on X.org Making Fast Progress · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's great to see X progressing in it's new home.

Now is the time to get the esthetics worked out before things get entrenched. The screenshots of the drop shadows show a shadow around all of the edges of the windows. This looks really funny since this implies that the light source is directly over the center of each window. Why is there a shadow on the top? If we're going to have a rendered-style look we should choose a decent place for the light so we can have some consistency.

I vote for the light source to be at offscreen at the top left.

What's the problem with you guys? You must have some terrible software. I came home the other day and my wife had made a database of potential baby names with a little field to rate them. She had no help from me. She's not even a geek.

She just used the simple database program that came included with her Mac.

You don't need to learn SQL to set up a little database for things like this! Use spreadsheets for numbers!

Okay, so I'm a little bitter after having to convert hundreds of ever-so-slightly differently formatted spreadsheets containing system info and putting them into a database. (Well at least it got me to learn Perl.)

As for the main discussion.... Come on! Get a sharpie and some cardboard boxes!

  11. Not a PCI card on Seeking Drivers for Unknown Apple Ethernet Card? · · Score: 1

If the submitter is unable to find part numbers, software procedures should have been tried. I'm not sure (never owned an LC-era machine) but if I wanted to know what a strange PCI card was, I'd pop it in my x86 Linux box and check /proc/pci for any information. There's probably some kind of equivalent for the LC.

No, it's a PDS card. PDS stands for Processor Direct Slot. Never seen one of them in an x86 box!

I bought one of these same cards for my LC III back in the day, but that was a few machines ago. I don't tend to throw things away, but finding an old driver might be pushing it...

  12. Vertical space more valuble on OmniWeb Announces 5.0 Browser · · Score: 1

This tabbing design might be a good idea, but not for those reasons. Horizontal space is less valuble. When things take up horizontal space it means you have to scroll more. However, putting those same objects in vertical space means that you have to scroll less and the lines you are reading are shorter and easier to scan.
