    I've heard that this also differs between Canadanian and US usage. The context I heard it in referred to bands. While an American would say "Aerosmith is..." Canadian would "Aerosmith are...". Can anyone verify this?

    Is stopping everyone from seeing images because some them might view porn really any more moral than (for example) stopping everyone on the internet from using file sharing because some files might be pirated?

    Some of their hardware doesn't suck. It's thanks to them that scroll wheels are common on mice, and I've heard the optical mouse is cool and some people are happy with the sidewinder stuff. I've been pretty happy with my natural keyboard too. In fact, if it were up to me, I'd have them stop making software altogether and stick at what they're good at.

    If they pursue litigation with the Offspring, then their mostly teenage/young adult fanbase will see them as "selling out" and not only messing with a cool band but totally reversing their opinions on copyrighted material
    That wouldn't be reversing their (official) opinion on copyright at all. Napster has always said that copyrights shouldn't be violated, even by their customers.

    I found it the same way and wondered the same thing. It seems that it is in the Your Rights Online section (even though it doesn't say so in the title) and like Ask Slashdot, those don't always appear on the front page (it seems silly that most Ask Slashdot's aren't on the front page because not enough people see the questions for the ones who know to respond which should be the whole point of Ask /. ). Add a YRO slashbox if you don't want to miss the stories.

    Here's one thing about it I found particularly interesting (from the Apple web site):
    Amazingly, we figured out how to cool this enormous G4 power without a fan, making this one of the quietest computers ever built.
    Does anyone know how its cooling and if we should see other computers doing this soon? The only reason I don't leave my box running over night is the noise.

    So what? Just because Netscape also does this doesn't make it good thing. It just means that both suck. Of course, you pretty much have to use one, but that doesn't mean you can't critisize what they (both of them) do in terms of being compliant.

    There are plenty of people who don't support movie ratings either. Especially because the MPAA admits bias in how they give them. For example, Coming Soon and American Pie came out at the same time. American Pie was more explicit, but since it was about male sexuality, it got an R rating while Coming Soon had trouble avoiding nc17. And the MPAA admitted that they were being biased, but said it was okay because they were just representing what parents would think. For reasons like this, plenty of people oppose movie ratings. So don't assume that because video game rating are similar they must be okay.

    But if enough people did that, it would become too much of a hassle to find the files that actually were metallica songs, so most people wouldn't bother. Thus, this would have the effect of making people stop pirating metallica songs, so even though they would "have a tough time making a case," this wouldn't be a problem because they wouldn't have a case anymore; they would have gotten what they wanted and you would have given it to them.

    To stretch an analogy that has been used on /. before, it is not illegal to tell somebody "there is a drug dealer selling E on the corner of 6th and Main", police informers do it all the time... but if you are in the business of directing people to where they can find drug dealers, and make a profit by giving out that information, you are crossing the line.

    Interestingly, the police informer doing this is in the "business" of doing so and does make a profit from it.

    We use Java for web stuff (what else can you do with it?).

    That's my point. I wish you could do more with it. I would rather write applications in java than in c or c++, but that's just not practical.
