The battlefield 2142 community has been experiencing global lag issues over the past weeks with no response from EA/Dice. Their customer support is virtually non existent, and they are expecting everyone to pony up for Bad Company 2. This has all the hallmarks of a business ready to implode. I just hope that this recent announcement is to free up server space for a growing battlefield community and not just to boost shareholder profits.
Didn't we (Britain) solve this problem already when we colonised Australia? Sending criminals is the answer!!, we don't have to worry about them dying and they get the freedom of Mars!. voila! Lisa Nowak might be a good candidate...
Apparently the earth has ceased to have magnetic poles many times in the past and is set to lose is field in 1-2K years. A reversal leaves a geological record and also would cause an increase in genetic mutation, increasing genetic diversity. Which is a good thing?
I suggested creating a chatroom for different interest groups 5 years ago and the idea was dismissed out of hand. I was working for a UK MOD contractor. It suprised me that management was so adverse to having employees discuss their opinions in an open forum, the benefits to me seemed to be that new starters would be able to search past posts to answer the questions that all new starters are afraid of asking. It seems to be related to the addage 'think a lot, say very little, write nothing'. The written word is very powerfull in influencing people and management prefer to be the only ones doing it, with memos and 'official' emails. Saying all that, another company I worked for did start a discussion forum, but it contained a forumn to talk to the director and each forumn was moderated by upper management which put most people off, most people preffered to stay under the radar of upper management and avoid appearing to 'rock the boat', posted but did allways feel as though I was identifying myself as a trouble maker.
Damn i've gone and done it again, now waiting for my P45, must not post, must not post, the urge is too strong...
1) Document a DTD for your contributors and make them aware of it (i'm sure they already exist for accademic papers and such), the DTD can be used in conjuction with some editors to validate the document produced. 2) Use Xalan or similar stylesheet transformation tool to parse document and generate HTML. 3) Create a page that your contributors can use to upload their documents and see how they look once style has been added. 4) Write something to transform word documents into your DTD. 5) Clean up documents that you have translated yourself 6) Bounce documents back to their owner citing web based preview tool if they do not conform.
Oh come on! Those games are not very good, take a look at http://www.gamehouse.com for some real web game (services??). I didn't spot the paint program so I can't comment on it. The jump start paint demo was quite impressive and that is years old.
Okay, so I downloaded the viewer 362K (so far so good..)
Run the installer, took a few seconds (great!)
Took a look at the demos, only a few seconds to download and view (quick!), and then I quickly lost interest. The demos are rubbish!
Visited some of the other Rebol enabled sites, the demos did not get any better!
I just don't see anybody wanting to write any serious applications for this platform. JNLP the Java web application launching protocol has much better demo applications available. http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart
Show me a serious application such as a paint program or a game and i'll take this seriously otherwise forget it!

Dark matter! what would we do without it...

And I thought the scottish were proud of being tight? go figure!
Surely:
1) Document a DTD for your contributors and make them aware of it (i'm sure they already exist for accademic papers and such), the DTD can be used in conjuction with some editors to validate the document produced.

Easy!
Now you just got to implement all that stuff...:)
Good luck.
Posted from my 17" powerbook, woohhahaha....
