I don't know about that. I think certain people in the government are just waiting for something like this to happen to help convince the 80 percent of the US that are morons its time to "stop the cyber-terrorists". Then its unique ID's on the internet, centralized and monitored network hubs, ect. Maybe Im being a tin-foil hat nut but I don't have alot of faith in the US population that allows themselves to be duped into the Patriot act and TSA gropings.

Ahh! But SOME people who work in their garage are master carpenters or craftsmen. Its just too ambiguous and is based on opinion. Its better to err on the side of caution in regard to constitutional rights, IMO, and protect the right of people to disseminate information. Granted, this is all a moot point because Assange isn't protected by our government to this right since he is not a US citizen. I applaud Wikileaks exposing of corruption when they actually publish stuff from banks/corrupt officials/insurance, but some things they do seem to color their agenda as more anti-US than actually beneficial to global society.

I have a job, it pays crap. Way less than poverty for a single person. Im a Research assistant for a computational bioscience lab at a tier-one research university. This being the case, my tuition is paid for. I have to pay for my own books as well as university fees. I cannot survive without government loans, especially since they made me sign a form stating it is grounds for termination if I get a second job. Ive had one anyway at times, but its hard to get a job when you don't have 4 years of experience in this economy. Believe me, Ive looked for tutoring jobs, to programming, to IT (basically the stuff I can do). I have a 3.7 GPA, a bachelors degree, and a modest apartment. Yeah, I could have done the Military, however I disagree with all the wars being fought, so its against my principals. Its not as easy as you make it sound.

There is some discussion of ways to prove it using a different set of axioms and whether or not it can be proven or disproven or neither. How could one prove the Axiom of Choice?

I love my home country and all, but as far as science goes, its all supporting the military and DHS. Additionally, you get paid crappy for doing it unless your an administrator or professor of some kind. To top it off, you get over-priced or crappy health care and you get indebted to the government for most of your life if you choose to go to college and happen to be one of the people that don't have family money.

Do some research on the shuttle program and then post again. NASA never received the requested budget for the shuttle program, hence the reason it sucked so bad. One fallout of lack of funding was that they used segmented booster rockets to save money, but that ended up being part of the reason for the Challenger disaster. I don't disagree that there may be waste in bureaucracies, but the DoD, and DHS are absolute textbook definitions of wasteful bureaucracies and they collectively get about 40 times the budget of NASA.

Typically, the record industry companies do keep rights to the musicians music. The contract may state the musician gets to perform it at any time, and that they get a percentage of each sale, but overall the record industry gets to decide when and where to release the music, and who gets to use it at what price. As an artist gets more popularity, like Elton John or Ray Charles, they can demand that their music copyrights are theirs just because a record company would be stupid not to cater to them. As far as new bands are concerned, its not uncommon for them to get ripped off.

Even so, you should only be liable for the damages you actually caused. I.e. how many people directly downloaded it from you times the cost of the work maybe with an additional small multiplier for penalizing the person and of course the court fees. An example would be 99 cents per song X 50 people that downloaded it X 2 penalty + Court costs. Getting hit with million dollar penalties is ridiculous. Its not right to illegally acquire media, but its also not right to hold onto copyrights for hundreds of years. It ends up generally screwing the artist over more than anyone else since these copyrights are usually held by big business. The state of the industry uses its employees (artists) and muscles its own consumers around. Its just god awful business practices, but its essentially an oligopoly so theres not much we can do about it short of listen to crappy indie music.

My side, I firmly believe, is more rational. Just discredit the dude and be done with it. Frame him, dig up dirt on his personal life, whatever. Killing him would give people like me one more reason to become disenfranchised, and I already have too many. People will only take so much before there is a full on revolution and anything that looks like assassination will just take things closer to that. People may be cowards but eventually enough people get pissed off and do something about it. Right now we have a disparity in wealth, lack of employment, and a police state. Once people can't afford food and get tired of being arrested for questioning their government, there will be home born "terrorists". Perhaps after 10 years Assange will be a blip on the map, but they can't continue pulling all the shit they have been over the last 5 years and get away with it indefinitely.
