This has got to be the most hilarious post I've seen in a year. Makes a year of wading thru leftist snotty clueless brats worthwhile.

  2. Re:When you step back and consider history on Beginning Ruby · · Score: -1

I started with z80 Assembly and TRS-80 Basic, then 6502 Assembly and Commodore64 Basic. Then I got a degree in CompSci and chose a job using C on Unix as my first job. From bash/sed/awk/grep stuff I easily learned Perl which I though was totally awesome (programming sed/awk was a pain). I also self-taught C++ in the early 90s.

I got very excited about perl and use it for most of my scripting, but C++ has paid the bills since.

A dabbling in Python and Zope got me initially interested in these but that faded fast - couldnt get over the indentation. I heard about Ruby but thought it was just another interpreted PL and put it off.

When I saw Java I immersed myself into it but never got excited about it or found a regular use for it. I worked at MSFT for a year to learn .Net C#. I liked the language but it had much take off from java and was vendor specific.

Then I played with Ruby and Rails on a whim. I was very excited about Ruby. It seemed to have ALL the best features of Perl and others (smalltalk, Python) without the negatives.

I bumped into a customer with a need for a small internal web page. I started to contract it out but ended up doing it myself. I was able to bill over $15k USD for playing with RoR on the side off and on for 3 months.

I did have to learn SVN, an upgrade of my CVS and update my CSS knowledge. I also upgraded to Apache2.2 (from 1.3) and MySQL 5.x from 3 and 4.

Ruby gems such as capistrano made it VERY simple to deploy. I had to learn a bit about configuring apache2.2 to load balance a pack (cluster) of mongrels but this was fairly easy to do.

I havent been this excited about a language since Perl.
Just like Perl superceded bash/sed/awk/grep. C++ improved C (by an enormous factor). Ruby did the same for my Perl, Python and Java knowledge. Ruby does snarf a TON of the best stuff from Python and Perl - leaving the undesireable (IMO) behind.

Add in the Rails framework when developing web sites and there's nothing like it.

Even Java and C# seems old and static as compared to Ruby.

Get into Ruby AND/OR Rails. it's really worth it. If not for the quick money - do it for the fun of it. If an old kumudgen like me can do it - anyone can.

I have been doing this using KeySpan USB server plugged into my wireless access point (using PSK TKIP). I can scan documents over the wireless network using my very old HP 3200 Multifunction Scanner, backup to my 300GB usb drive and many other tasks.

For access to legacy usb devices this Keyspan server really is nice.

I also have a silex 2.0 usb server (and corresponding 2.0 hub) but it just doesnt have the backwards capability with older devices as the keyspan does.

The negatives to the Keyspan USB server are:

    - My main linux server (Knoppix 5.02 with a 4MB img file) cannot access this drive (Linux driver anyone?)
    - Extremely slow for large files (USB 1.x speeds)
    - Driver development seemed to have completely stopped and it's buggy (occasional BSODs).
    - Max 4 USB devices (HP930C Printer, HP3200 Multifunction, SanDisk CF reader, ext USB HD)

I have recently moved my external USB drive to my linux box and share via samba for performance reasons, but I regret having to keep a desktop machine up and running 24/7 (power consumption).

Ideally, using a low power LAMP (linux) box would be optimal.

"There is a big difference between liberals and conservatives. We're not talking apples and oranges, folks, but apples and orgies. In her latest book, "Treason", Ann Coulter puts it clearly:

"Conservatives believe man was created in God's image, while liberals believe they are gods. All of the behavioral tics of the liberals proceed from their godless belief that they can murder the unborn because they, the liberals, are themselves gods. They try to forcibly create 'equality' through affirmative action and wealth redistribution because they are gods. They flat-out lie, with no higher power to constrain them, because they are gods. They adore pornography and the mechanization of sex because man is just an animal, and they are gods. They revere the U.N. and not the U.S. because they aren't Americans--they are gods."

It-s hard for salt of the earth, hard working, hard playing pro-American types to wrap their minds around why their liberal neighbors hate the U.S. so much. But liberals do, and it's a staple of their worldview's diet. They reflexively root for that which will undo our great land.

As far as the liberals are concerned, the battle is joined ... the war is on. We must recognize the primal nature of the contest, the fundamental loathing the left has for virtually everything that conservatives cherish.

Concerned citizens of our amazing country need to be aware of the fear and loathing of the liberals and meet them head on at the polls, through the media and in the public square.
