Also, intention usually counts a lot in crimes. Judges nor the layman (or what are those called in usa again) aren't usually really computer oriented, and they can see that user didn't have bad intention but the actual bad guys had.

Hell, even usa gov networks are hacked all the time now. Would you sue them for not securing them correctly? Would you sue car owner for not having 10m armored wall around the car when they park it?

The "DRM" you are talking about is just checks that you have the DVD in drive. That doesn't count as DRM.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management
"The term is used to describe any technology which makes the unauthorized use of such digital content and devices technically formidable, but generally doesn't include other forms of copy protection which can be circumvented without modifying the file or device, such as serial numbers or keyfiles."

Nobody ever talked about DRM when mentioning those serials since the 80's. It only means those situations when game exe or disc (or video content or whatever) contains those encryptions etc shit (that also can break more or less in certain situations).

Serial code is still a good, non-bothering system. It has some effect to bring down the casual copying, you can restrict online content with it and it works always.

A few free downloadable content packs that would require online registration is all that's needed to make a number of customers out of pirates. It works for Stardock.

Actually, EA is doing exactly this with The Sims 3. When you register your game as legitly bought you get 1000 free points to download more stuff from their item store. So you get the free downloadable content there aswell.

  8. Re:andnothingofvaluewasgained on The Sims 3 Racks Up Over 180,000 Downloads Prior To Release · · Score: 1

Nice move not using DRM, its a shame its still the most retarded "game" i can think of.

However I think the market for game actually lowers the piratism rate for The Sims. There will be lots of younger and older girls wanting to play this game aswell, and most of them (or their parents) will probably buy this game. Atleast way more than with other games. Now I must note that I'm waiting for this game too, so I wouldn't count it as girls-only game either. But the market is bigger with this title.

Now what makes me sad is that pirates will keep pushing statistics and sales down for usual games they like to play, and EA will just see that The Sims franchise sells so much better than the other games. Now here's a homework for you: Figure out if that will affect what kind of games they like to make.

Damn right so. Nuclear weapons seem to be great way for countries to make sure other countries arent going to attack them and that is probably why other countries are so afraid of North Korea having nukes. I really doubt they will use them for anything other than having them around for defence, because if they do there will be many countries attacking them and nuking the whole place to shit right away.

Its also a nice note that only US has so far used nukes against other countries and then they attack other countries making their own ones. quite a hypocrisy, would I say.

You seem to forget here that most of the exploits now a days are from third party programs. These exploits are just aswell possible on mac/linux once the userbase is just there. Some windows services have been exploitable, but thats because like 90-95% of desktop computers use Windows, so its better idea to try to find exploits on them. However aswell as Windows, both Mac's and Linuxes have had their share of exploits to third party programs.

Whatever else we may think about Apple, they made a sound, pragmatic decision when they threw out the old OS 9 architecture and replaced it with what is essentially a BSD-like system with their own work on top to make it pretty. Unix, by its very nature, is actually quite hard to crack if sensible operating defaults are followed.

Most malware work just enough good when run under user account aswell. You do not need root access to most of the functions they do.

For example the recently hugely exploited Adobe PDF reader exploits would work quite aswell on Mac's. You seem to be blaiming OS's instead of the third party programs. Mac and Linux will have just as much malware as soon as its profitable enough for the malware authors.

  19. Re:They should use macs on FBI, US Marshals Hit By Virus · · Score: 4, Insightful

Also, most mac users think and they're told that theres no malware and they're secure, so they have the mentality of "nothing can hit me" and even tho theres a few mac av's, almost noone runs them.

Hell, there's botnets running inside _routers_. What makes it think that mac is somehow some bulletproof solution. You dont need root to send spam or ddos either.

Mac is also a standardized os, so its a lot easier to make malware for it than the tons of different linux os's. And its already true, but because of this mentality Apple and Mac users have given to everyone, they think they're safe. It's really stupid from Apple's part, because the problem keeps just rising and one day it gets hit badly and no one has prepared because of their assumptions.

Yes, the amount of malware for mac's is lower than Windows, but so is mac userbase. However there are many OSX malware circumventing already and it seems to be just going up.

And no, not all malware require root to run. They can easily run under your user account aswell and still steal lots of data, passwords and keylog etc. If they require root, then social engineering attack will get past most users as they happily enter their root password.
