I had a visceral reaction to the article. This is because they are pointing out the obvious and then pretending they are performing some kind of public service and pat themselves on the back.

Do they really think the data centers don't know these things? Do they really think they are not trying to address them? Power costs are pretty high up on the balance sheet and anyone who's been paying attention knows there are millions of dollars spent on researching ways to bring those costs down.

So it's kind of like a guy standing at a car wreck watching the rescuers trying to pull someone from a car and saying, "if you don't get that guy out of there, he's gonna die". No Shit Sherlock.

Just shows that reporters are idiots. Always have been and always will be.

  19. AMTRAK on When Flying Was a Thrill · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think that AMTRAK is missing the boat here and there is a big opportunity for other companies to bring back traveling by train big time.

First, there is a constant drone of opinion and advice to slow life down.

Second, as mentioned in the summary, traveling by air is a giant PINA.

I think that if done right, rail travel could be cheaper than air travel and much more pleasant.

    Done right =

    1. Non-stop routes.
    2. Good food at normal restaurant rates.
    3. Technology accommodations (Wireless, chargers, etc.)
    4. Of course sleeping accommodations.

I've looked at traveling by rail instead of air before but at the moment it is much more expensive to go the same distance and includes and unreasonable number of stops (they have it like a stupid commuter bus). I seem to remember that I could have driven and saved almost two days over AMTRAK.

Now, where can I get a few billion dollars for start up costs (not including the money to buy off politicians)?

    5. A bad reputation....does anyone really want to work at Dell?

I think that in all likelihood the vast majority of achievements in the world came from people who were NOT compelled to work 12 hour days. They may have been working long hours, but they did that because of their passion or competitive drive...they wanted to.

But unless you are on some legitimate high states deadline, long days for the sake of longs days is a bad idea all the way around.
