  1. Re:Selling Games without a publisher... on Can Game Developer Unrest Lead to Revolution? · · Score: 1

    What are these credibility problems?

I can't see how progress can be anything but slow when you have four members of staff. Considering that, and CoDo's interaction with the LSN community through the forums, I think they are a very good example of how games development can be done differently.

  2. Selling Games without a publisher... on Can Game Developer Unrest Lead to Revolution? · · Score: 1

    ...can be done.

Take a look at Laser Squad Nemesis - Written by the same guys who did X-Com. A free download, players can join the league by paying a subscription (various lengths).

You don't need the backing of a publisher to make a game work. LSN has done it by good marketing (especially being championed by popular UK games magazine PC-Zone).

I've read somewhere that there are huge concrete gates either side of the Thames in the tunnels which cross. They can be dropped if the tunnel floods.

I'm a regular reader of AICN, and have a lot of respect for Harry.

I also have no doubt that Harry has genuinely seen the film.

What gets me is the timing of this. There's plenty of postings here about what Lucas gains out of this scoop, but what about Harry?

Anyone noticed that he's just released his first book? And is right now travelling the world promoting it? He even mentions talking more about the film at one of his book signings in the PS of his review.

The timing of this scoop seems very convenient for Harry.

Depends who you define as "user". If you're in the software development department of a firm, then the user, as far as you're concerned, might be the support department. They may well need to see the code, and fix bugs in it. That's when "nice and pretty" code can save time for everyone.

Working in support myself, I know the value of developers who can write easy to understand code. And i've also seen my fair share of rubbish too...

  8. Re:Other Sports on RoboCup 2001 Underway · · Score: 2, Interesting
It's a nice idea, but the challenge in Robocup is in making the robots play as a team. Football (or Soccer for you non-UK types) is a fairly simple game that incorporates all the problems of simulating a team sport.

Most other sports don't have the teamplay aspect. Whilst it would fun to watch robots throwing javelins around a hall full of people, it doesn't require the incredible coding and engineering skills that the Robocup contestants have.

However, they do have a Robot Rescue competition. This requires robots to negotiate an arbitrary warehouse rescuing victims of a fire.

Last month's PC-Zone magazine in the UK had a good article about the supposed link between Video games and violence. Its conclusion was that violent events like Columbine are far more down to American culture than any game. The best way they illustrated this was by comparing the US to Japan, where video games are incredibly popular, yet violent crime is very low. Neil
