Together, with Canada, the US has over 20% of the Earth's fresh water supply. The US also has some of the most fertile, extensive, and developed agricultural land. Even the demographics of the US are healthy, with steady growth. The US is by far the most innovative country on the planet. The USD is the reserve currency of the Earth, accounting for over 60% of all transactions for a reason - such as being the SOLE super-power --- or should I say hyper-power. It's easy to descend into hyperbole when trying to quantify just how GOOD the US (along with her closest allies) have it. The future looks bright indeed. --- doomers are missing out.

Most developing countries have communications monopolies. ie. State Owned. One reason is control, the other reason is profit. In many African countries for example, VSATS have huge tariffs levied to discourage their use by local governments. These initiatives will not see wide use. Can you imagine FB trying to get away with this in Rural India or China? There would be war!

I'm a contractor and though I don't work in Iraq or Afghanistan I have friends who have for many years. Their companies have made hundreds of millions (some have made billions), while they themselves have become minor millionaires. There is no accountability. The world is a small place, and DC is even smaller. If you know the right people you can get anything you want. No bid contracts anyone? The latest wikileaks confirm that Afghanistan is indeed a cesspool of corruption, though anyone who has been there knows that perfectly well.
No... the sad reality is that Iraq was invaded on the behest of a handful of very determined (and cynical) cabal of civil servants (all of which have ties to the arms industry I might add) who made the conscious decision that PAX AMERICA was worth the sacrafice. Control over the PRIZE of Iraq, the second largest oil producer on the planet was worth ANY price. Truth be damned.

The biggest problem in most African countries (particularly subsaharan) is unemployment. Many African countries have nearly 50% unemployment! Why is this?
Firstly, there are no jobs. There are no jobs because there is little foreign investment in industry. There is little foreign investment in industry because of rampant corruption to the highest levels, thereby creating great instability.
Africa is ofcourse resource rich, so the easiest way to make money there is to extract the raw materials and get it the hell out as quick as possible.
Now, if one were to invest billions in infustructure, that creates jobs. Jobs allow families to fund the education of their children. A better educated populace is able to better take care of themselves and hopefully usher in a better generation of civil leaders.
Providing cheap reliable electricity is also a key component to development. One would hope that some of the power generation from these arrays would help the local populace.
Change like this takes decades, but it happening. Africa is more stable and peaceful now that it has ever been. Considering how far they yet have to go, its quite an acheivement.
Let us all hope he stays alive and free long enough to carry out his mission! (and please Julian, don't accept cups of tea from strangers (or any cookies for that matter)!
