...but am I the only one on this planet who hates The Sims?

Nope. I don't like it, and a buddy of mine wants to kill anyone who ever programmed something with "Sim" in the title. I personally have never played The Sims, but the very concept is IMHO flawed.

Bit OT.... But with every successive Sim game I've become more annoyed with the series. I played SimCity for a couple of hours before frustration set in, then the next game lasted about three.... SimAnt lasted ten minutes, while SimIsle didn't even last the tutorial. They all sound so cool, but they never stand up to scrutiny. (And I get a chance to play 'em all, as I know a Sim-fanatic who owns and loves demoing them.)

And Computer Gaming World's obsession with The Sims has spawned a veritable orgy of Sim-loving this month, with them pulling out ever cheap trick to try to get you to read the many many Sims articles they have. Eugh. Though I did skim the mildly humorous article where one guy created a Sim-doppelganger of himself, then held a party. All the partygoers ignored him and chatted it up with each other. His SimSelf wound up passed out on the bathroom floor. When the computer starts telling you that you have no life....

My, my. This was more interesting than I had expected from a short throwaway comment. I think I'll write a report.:)

First off, yes, the 99% was a made-up number. The word "almost" might have been put to use far better. That's my fault. And yes, a lot of Intel's newer stuff isn't worth the profit margin either.:)

Second off, no, I am not any sort of Intel shill. Just because I don't like AMD's product line doesn't mean I really like Intel's either, it just so happens that the eight or so Intel boxes I've used and kludged around worked better with my own stuff than the six or so AMD boxes. You might want to go talk to the mobo manufacturers about that, I don't know, but the performance gap I saw fell a little too neatly on the AMD-Intel line for my taste.

    Begin OT...

Which brings me to my third point: It's my taste. I can hate AMD all I want. My life. While I might have phrased my commentary a bit better, it was not meant as trolling (insert Portman joke here), but as a personal opinion. For those of you who responded with thought-out commentary, I must say that I'm impressed that you took the time out for it and I thank you for the discussion, which I'll save for any possible future reference. For those who prefer name calling, well....

Because some of us need 100% compatibility, and AMD's 99% compatibility doesn't cut it. I've used AMD systems before and, for my uses, they don't cut it by a long shot.

But Grossman DOESN'T talk about how the kid was firing semirandomly into a crowd without picking targets. The crowd was dense enough that it would take a good shot to aim and *not* hit someone. Since the ones that were hit likely fell, it's no wonder they weren't there to take the next bullet.

Also, he doesn't mention that a cop who is in a situation where he should fire his gun is on an adrenaline rush and chasing someone who more than likely is better armed than he is.

Grossman really ticks me off because he's a hypocrite. When talking to a group of mostly-gamers, he uses calm, somewhat reasoned discussion. I still think he's wrong, but he comes off as slightly more sensible than the normal media pundit. (Even if he seems to think gamers are also Trekkies/Trekkers.)

However, I hold in my hand an article from yesterday's paper where, when talking at a press conference where he was selling his book, he calls game-makers "scum" who are worse than "pimps, pushers and pornographers". Admittedly, some people in the industry can be total jackasses, but worse than "pimps, pushers and pornographers"? There's a way to take a non-issue and put it in front of the stuff that's *really* causing problems.

I noticed - looks like it'll be released well before Daikatana (which is IMHO looking like little more than a very expensive lesson in game making for Romero), if only because it has a better development team behind it. Various gaming magazines are picking up on it now, and it looks like it just might live up to the hype.

56K? And you're complaining? I'm on a 33.6 that thinks it's 26.4. Now all I need is some guy on a 14.4 to come along and make me feel like a jackass.... Then I guess I'll need to get my C64 with 2400 baud modem out and see if I can find something that makes it understand HTTP. We could have the first annual Slashdot Bandwidth Limbo! How low can YOU go?

And re: the Iridium flares, or whatever. Those shouldn't stop unless the satellites are commanded to move or to close the reflecting whatsits that IIRC cause the flares.
