Im not really impressed with anything over 2 channels of audio for any environment.
It just reeks of novelty... (anyone remember quadraphonic sound???) just a way to get people with too much money to buy more speakers...
to me multi-channel audio doesn't even fit well into the context of a movie. a movie takes place on a 2 dimensional field. sound from anywhere besides the front is distracting, and seldom used for any meaningful effect.
its hard enough setting up a decent listening environment for 2 channels! and besides the pan knobs on my mixer only go from L to R:)
this is incredibly stupid, and proves that the OS on DC-series cameras is un-necessarily complex. i use a DC260 at work and it sucks. it has all these fabulous bells and whistles and features and colorful menus, and now you can play games on it... but you may as well forget about EVER getting an action shot with one of these, or getting another picture out of it for at least 10 seconds after you snap one @ medium resolution. to be fair it does take good pictures, but it doesnt seem to have alot of spare power to process them. keep it simple,
i have been following this issue for a while now, and though i believe the "terminator" would not affect the 3rd world farmers who save seeds (3rd world subsistence farmers probably couldnt afford to buy hi-tech seed in the first place) RAFI is still sending an important message to the Mega-Agri corporations of the world.
The real victory here is that RAFI fought a successful info battle with a giant Agri-corporation like Monsanto and got them to bend.
RAFI even suggested that this "terminator" technology could be transferred to other plants and crops growing nearby... realistically this is impossible, but still a great scare tactic! they were effectively sending the message that "these crops will sterilize the world and turn it into a barren wasteland"
It may be worth noting that the vast majority of 1st world farmers dont plant part of their crop for seed, (its just not cost effective for them to save seed) "store bought" seed has some really fabulous insecticides and chemicals on it that helps them germinate and keeps out the bugs...
i hate to be pessimistic, but this little victory is only one small battle in the war against hunger and proprietary technology in general (the atrocities of the ADM's and Monsantos of the world that you DONT hear about are where you should really be concerned) because its really all about maximizing shareholder wealth, not feeding people.
i doubt it will become a real political issue. we have more important things to talk about like abortion and building more prisons.
cheap REAL computers are the only way to "get everyone connected" i think linux would fit nicely into this model, but we need to be very careful what direction this goes...
when "computers" as we know them become even cheaper and more ubiquitous and corporate amerika finally figures out how to cram the "high bandwidth internet for the masses" concept into the TV/Consumer/entertainment based box, we all lose anyway. the poor just have more channels... and they gain no real understanding of how it all works, and they might as well be watching tv.
as long as we are all buying the shite the box pushes at us, it doesnt matter what the OS the box runs... we're all slaves anyway.
if you were truly secure in your feelings for buffy, perhaps you would not be so quick to jump to the conclusion that i was speaking negatively of the show. i only stated that it was "disposable culture" and failed to see a strong parallel between buffy and Dr.V-whats-his-name's plight. TV was created to sell advertising. (of mostly consumable, or dare i say disposable things) Disposability does not make a thing bad. infact, many disposable things have value, and their intrinsically disposable nature creates this value... lighters, diapers, contact lenses, feminine hygiene products, etc... wonderful things they are, but ultimately it all ends up in a landfill.
interesting concept though... an attempt to draw a parallel between teenage activists rallying support for disposable culture, and defense of the time honored tradition of peer review in the medical research world.
well... actually i dont see the parallel... maybe i should put on my glasses.
of course those ultra smug and ever brilliant guys with the big paychecks in the medical journal world are scared. trying to figure out how to protect their sinking ship like any other traditional business that relies on print distribution. (or non-digital distribution)
they may claim that they are defending their traditional channels of peer review and protecting the integrity of the information, but they are really just trying to cover their assez.
obviously somebody has to stand up and suggest something like this to their little community. its happened everywhere else...
we've heard it all before. another nail in the coffin of traditional print culture. score another one for free information.
mp3's for djing?

this agreement could have far-reaching implications for ALL appliances! bread makers, rice cookers, toaters, Coffeemakers!
No longer locked in their proprietary little non-network-centric worlds, appliances the world over would be happy, upgradable, and JAVA based!
IP's for everyone!

im quite lost without it but cant really afford a new one.
i am wondering if it would be possible to modify my palm III cradle to work with the el-cheapo visor?
wishful thinking
right on,

Just what we need. UN involvement in the domain name game. as if interNIC needs any help being more incompetent.
we now return you to the previously scheduled "peacekeeping" mission.
