Excellent points about live performance and underground music. Many careers are made on this so called "piracy" of their music. I dj and compose as well, and i dont pay royalties to anyone, and noone pays me royalties unless they license a track for a cd compilation (PSST! HEY! that's where the money's at!!!)
The vast majority of the records i play don't have the "unauthorized public performance or lending" blurb on the label or sleeve. There is no room for legal disclaimers or legalese on my recordings if i ever release any.
I love seeing live performances and i love performing live as well. The interaction between the audience and the music and the musician is what really matters. Its pure magic folks, and mp3's are no replacement for a big-fucking-soundsystem and a group of my closest friends dancing and sweating together!
and i say why not? why should the net NOT be exempt? WHY do we just blindly accept that we should be taxed for things? Last time i checked i was a US citizen, and hey the government works for ME. and all i'm hearing is alot of unfounded rhetoric on the part of politicians who want to waste MORE of my money. have they given me a good reason to pay a tax? where would the money go? are they going to put ALL the money into teaching our kids to read? are they going to improve anything with this money? or are they just going to throw it into the big pot and squander it? A better question is--can they prove they are actually losing money because internet businesses are lowering the revenues of traditional brick-and-mortar businesses? NOOOOOOOOOO.... thats all bullshit! the numbers just aren't there!
Business is booming on all fronts! State governments are taking in more and more money from us because we are (supposedly) making more money and more of us are employed and buying more stuff (don't forget, the businesses who MAKE the stuff we buy pay taxes on their income too!!!!!! and the people who work at the places where they make the stuff we buy pay taxes. I look at the numbers on my paycheck, and A LARGE CHUNK of my paycheck goes to other people (not me) including THE STATE WHERE I LIVE.
YEAH! fuck the DJS! they could use a little action every once in a while...
And im real sorry, but most turntables ARE aimed at djs. I can think of roughly 10 models off the top of my head which are aimed at djs... including the venerable Technics SL-1200-MK2, and kids are buying boatloads of them! I know alot more people who own turntables than portable mp3 players actually:)
and wether you are a stuck up old audiophile who can afford a 30k turntable or a 14 year old with some beat up geminis and a couple cheezy hiphop battle records, vinyl is A BEAUTIFUL THING. and regardless of the "original primary purpose" of the turntable, some kids are doing some really interesting things with them these days besides just playing music.
VINYL IS BEAUTIFUL! and given the choice between a future with vinyl and a future with dvd audio, well i think its an easy decision:)
> because I'm into ALOT of the funky soul jazz > from the 60's and 70's, much of which is very > obscure and they'll never release the albums > onto CD

>ask him a few questions, Like how he himself would secure a server. What OS is the most secure (in his opinion).
how would he secure a server? he hasn't touched a computer for 5 years. I'm sure he's still a security expert, but 5 years is a long time in computer years.
im not sure what kind of isolation tank they had him in, but it would be alot more interesting to interview him in a month or two and get his perspective on the changes that have taken place in the last 5 years. (THAT could be enlightening)
I am the proud owner of a defective western digital 7200 rpm UW scsi AV drive. (it makes this really neat ka-chunka chunka chunka chunka sound when it boots up:)
it seems the "AV" drives are a problem for them.
I called Western Digital and asked why the heck i hadn't received my replacement after waiting 3 weeks with an RMA # and the tech tells me they make the AV version of the drives "by hand" and they don't expect to get any more in until sometime in february. i should call them tomorrow eh?
the ghetto-ization of billboards is an interesting concept, but the exposure billboards offer is alot different than a live TV spot. you dont drive past the same TV ad every day on your way to work.
However it is fun to think about the potential of cheaper billboards! maybe it would become affordable for artists to turn them into canvas? or maybe a platform for a little social commentary? im sick of looking at those awful anti-smoking billboards the tobacco industry was forced to throw up all over the place. the same ones have been up there for 6 months! sheesh!

can someone dumb this down for me? i think katz is trying to talk over my head again.
Waah. the big bad government is beating up on a little geek company. Great story here guys... groundbreaking journalism with only a link to a few paragraphs @ 2600? that can't be the whole story. How much was the interview edited to make the feds look bad? hasn't anyone else picked up the story?
can someone give me some specifics about the devices in question here? can we quit talking about gun control and search and seisure and consider what the real story is here?
I am always willing to side with the little guy being opressed by big brother, but you could at least do a little better job presenting the facts. All i have here is a poorly edited interview and an account of the raid from the "victim"
Ramsey Electronics turned up 296 matches on google. Mostly links from amateur radio enthusiasts, microbroadcasters / pirate radio advocates, and electronics heads. there are numerous personal accounts of their work / products / service and they're all glowing reviews.
Ramsey sounds like a great company, and i will consider them first when i get around to setting up my little radio station, but the fact remains that they violated some stupid law that the feds decided to selectively enforce. this is nothing new. the problem isn't necessarily with the feds. its with the law and selective enforcement.
I guess Ramsey needs to give more $ to politicians in the future and buy a little influence. maybe just sell their wares to the government?
i guess i didn't read the fine print:( i'm gonna fight it anyway.
American Express can be a HUGE pain in the ass to a vendor if a customer is not happy. i used our happy little corporate american xpress card (members since 81) and our company charges tens of thousands of dollars on amex every year. We'll see what happens.
my experience with CI-Host has been a nightmare from the first week. I have hosted 2 domains with them for roughly 3 months.
their tech support and their network is obviously a hacked together mess. it took them a month to actually get all 20 of our email addresses set up correctly. then for some reason the server hosting my websites and email got UNBEARABLY SLOW a month or so ago. (the traceroutes weren't even reaching the server sometimes)
so i bitched and bitched and bitched and they finally moved me to a less crowded server. (they tried to get me to stay on the server that wouldn't even load our site and wait for the network upgrade they supposedly did a few weekes ago. i said ABSOLUTELY NOT! so they moved it and guess what? the emails were screwed up again. oh gee... turns out you cant have 2 of the same email ids on the same server (example: dave@domain1.com prevents me from having dave@domain2.com) so you have to use redirects to make that work. of course their tech people couldn't set up the mailboxes and redirects correctly for me without much additional bitching.
so now i have nothing. my users have nothing. my boss is PISSED at me.
I dont give a flying fudgesicle about wether they lose any of my data or not. (oh thats real fucking reassuring that i will still have all my data from a backup 2 weeks ago when they botched the initial upgrade.) The real issue here is that my customers cant reach our site, or contact us via email. we are losing business because of this.
I am not happy with a free month of hosting. the $25 bucks a month i paid them for my site is INCONSEQUENTIAL compared to my lost business.
If you are a CI-Host customer, I would like to STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to call or write your credit card company and dispute the charges for CI-Host services. I paid for mine with american express. American Express has an excellent reputation for protecting their customers.
and complain about the service. reference articles about these problems. drag it out as long as you possibly can

I am guessing those are the max times with extremely high compression. does anyone have any "real world" #'s out there for how much decent quality video it will hold, how big the drive(s) are, and how well does the box work for YOU?
Wouldn't it be scary if Microsoft actually cared about public perception and handled situations like this a little better from a PR standpoint?
One scenario could have been microsoft special agent (and bodyguards:) show up at this old dood's house and give him a new gateway computer (+ tons of free microsuck products and 3 year's free subscription to MSN?) how much would that cost compared to the PR they would get in return for it? That kinda positive spin on the screwup would have been priceless! i wonder if microsoft is hiring?
the last failed mission was not a problem with conversions. the martians are just tired of our noisy little probes. we had to send this one all the way to the south pole so they would leave us alone.
