Feature: Good vs. Evil on the World Wide Web

We have been subjected to endless debates over whether children need protection from Internet porn and violence. But isn't there at least as much positive as negative material on the World Wide Web? I decided to find out by using opposing pairs of good and evil keywords in a series of AltaVista searches. The results were somewhat surprising. To begin with, the keyword good brought up a total of 18,803,720 results, while evil netted a mere 1,185,680. In other words, good appears to be more than 10 times as popular as evil online!

More evidence of Internet goodness:

Life got 23,765,261 results;
Death got only 5,973,580.

Love got 14,985,600 results;
Lust got only 889,330.

God got 5,596,690 results;
Satan only got 164,850;
Devil only got 635,160.

Marriage got 3,626,700 results;
Divorce only got 649,930.

Heaven got 977,930 results;
Hell only got 707,410.

Joy got 1,137,460 results;
Sorrow only got 190,740.

Linux got 3,461,380 results;
Unix got 1,948,040 results;
Windows NT only got 1,208,125.

Intelligence got 1,888,970 results;
Stupidity only got 77,430.

Apparently those misguided souls who condemn the World Wide Web as some sort of hellhole (3965 results) need to think again. The word Education was mentioned on 34,470,924 Web pages, while a search for Ignorance only came up with 141,530. And, despite endless yammer about kids getting hold of bomb-building instructions online, cruising the World Wide Web is statistically more likely to make them fat than to teach them how to blow up buildings; the word cooking netted 2,167,210 Web pages, the word Bomb only got 622,050, and the phrase homemade bombs only brought up 662.

Religious believers should take heart from the fact that Salvation drew 280,700 AltaVista responses, while Damnation only came up with 8141. Christians, instead of condemning the Internet as immoral, might want to change their tune and start boasting about their online dominance - the word Christian drew 6,715,031 results, as opposed to 93,240 for Jew, 322,740 for Muslim, 279,990 for Buddhist, and 236,420 for Hindu, while the word Atheist only came up with 78,870 pages.

What does all of this mean? I have no idea. This small (but rigorously unscientific) study, like the psychic hotlines advertised heavily on late-night cable TV, is meant to be used for entertainment purposes only. Please feel free to add to it (or subtract from it) and draw your own conclusions, which I'm sure will be far more insightful than any I could possibly come up with on my own.

      I don't think that's necessarily true. The digits of pi are not random. If I understand correctly, in an infinite random string we would eventually see all finite substrings, but that's not necessaruly true for a non-random non-repeating string. For example, even though the following decimal never repeats or terminates

      0.123456789011223344556677889900111222333444555666 777888999....

      the string "4321" never appears. The digits of pi don't come as easy as those of the number above, but they are deterministic, not random.

      This is actually incorrect, Pi is random and at the same time deterministic. The two are not mutually exclusive. The defenition of deterministic is that you can get the same sequence as often as you like.

      The definition of random is that you can not predict what the next number in the sequence will be without calculating it, and that the distribution of different numbers follows a gausian curve. (Not a flat line as you might expect.)

      I'll elaborate, the two requirments are actually the same. If it was a flat curve, and you noticed that part of it was a little low, you could guess that that number has a much higher likelyhood of being the next one - i.e. you can predict the number to some degree, which isn't random. With a gausian you can't tell which one is next, any number can be next, it just changes the gausian.

      Pi (and all transendentals, and probably all irrationals as well) will, if you look long enough, contain every possible sequence that exists.

      For fun get a deck of cards remove the non digit cards, shuffle, then pull out 5 cards, lay them out, memorize them, flip them over, then recite the number as you turn them back over. If you get it right make the next sequence 6 cards, wrong 4 cards, etc. See how high you get.

      This is a test only of short term memory, you have only 30 or so seconds to memorize, then recite and forget the stream, for a better test memorize it in one reading, flip the card over as you read it, then go back to the start and read it back.

      PS. Some tips, use as many parts of the brain to memorize the stream as possible, some sections to use are: visual, words (language), sound, numbers, music (tone), pattern (aural), pattern (visual). Each section is capable of memorizing on it's own a different stream of numbers. Put them all together - swich between them as needed, and memorize the sequence of memory types seperately and you can memorize almost anything.

      For long term memory I would suggest you test yourself to see which section (of your brain/soul) can remember the best. For nearly everyone this would be a combination of music and pattern (aural). But many people can do visual a lot better. Smell works extremly well, but it's not so good for specific information, it's better at general feel.

      For me for example, for precise information I use pattern (aural) with a kind of singsong (music). For the rest I use visual, I remember the image of what the item, situation, looked like. Which makes it hard (for me) to remember a persons name, but I'll never forget a face (and everything that goes with it, i.e. the other memories associated with the memory). It's like the face (visual) is the hash key for the rest of the memories.

      PS With Pi I actually remember the location and the paper I used to memorize Pi (the first 30 digits) (this was about 10-15 years ago) visually. I recently added 10 digits and those are remembered seperately :( I need to work on linking the two memories. -Ariel

The general public doesn't give a damn either way, and that's a Bad Thing(tm).
