  1. What I'm doing about it on Senator Says Spammers Have First-Amendment Rights · · Score: 1

I post articles to newsgroups now with the return address spammenot@federal.gov.au
I assume this is sending a reasonable amount of spam at the Australian federal government. The way I see it, the government's laws would require me to pay to download advertising, but this way they are paying LESS than I would, as they buy internet access in bulk, and as they probably don't have to download the entire add - just the intended recipient, and then issue a 'no such user' error message.
I'm not really sure of the legality of this - I remember seeing somewhere that it may be illegal to impersonate someone else - but I'm not exactly impersonating someone else - just Mr spammenot...
Maybe this approach will help the government to see that its people don't appreciate the position it puts most good people in in comparison to what it's doing for the scumbag spammers.
What do people think about this approach - including my legal position. (Note that I'm posting to slashdot with a bastardised verion of MY email address for now).

I can see a nice little niche market here. Linux's real-time processing isn't up to scratch yet for stuff like hard disk recording, and I wouldn't mind pissing off my Windows partition if I could find a Cakewalk lookalike for the Amiga. Oh yeah, I'd have to wait for Wine to install Office into a non-windows setup. And then ... I'd be set.
My only fear is that there isn't a large enough market to support another OS with Linux and OS-X talking up the Windows-haters. But I would LOVE for it to happen. Where are the apps? (that hurt)

I was absolutely amazed 6 months ago when I downloaded & compiled wine with no probs, installed Starcraft + Expansion CD and started playing. Since then I've had varying success with Office 97 & 2000. I can't for the life of me install either into a non-windows setup, but parts of Office 97 run OK run a Windows installation. I'm haning out for 3 things ...

    1) A freaking configuration utility for a non-windows setup.
    2) Office to install into above setup.
    3) Something other than Starcraft working. To be fair, I've almost gotten half-life to work, and I had IE 5.5 going too. But no 3dmark 2000, or anything else I throw at it. Maybe it's me.

I like the idea of wine though. I don't think it will impact the development of Linux software. ALl those who were going to write for Linux still are. We're just attracting the attention of those who previously wouldn't have had that option. And if the wine libs prove to be more stable (heh) and faster than Windows - which is quite possible - then we'll really have something to make a noise about.

I'm running the latest release of OpenOffice. It's OK. There doesn't seem to be much difference from StarOffice 5.2. I think some work has been done to break the different apps apart, but the default is to still load the 'soffice' all-encompassing thing. As for why there's not more hype over OpenOffice - from my perspective it's a great project, but not particularly useful for the company I work for. We are _very_ reliant on Visual Basic. Call it evil & impure & fugly, but it's easy. You can expect any programmer to be able to use it. And even non-programmers can delve into it. I don't think any office app will get much interest until it can perform in the office - VB and all. There is just so much legacy VB code in use...
And unfortunately for OpenOffice, Wine is almost able to run M$ Office. I've personally been able to get Word and Excel loading from a Windows installation. I haven't been able to install in a windows-free environment, but I've been following the progress, and, well, there is progress. Check out the wine mailing lists. I can see companies installing Office into Linux, but I just can't see companies installing OpenOffice into Linux. It's just too scary...
