If I came into work and threatened to blow the entire place to bits - I expect no less than to be fired, tossed onto the street, and dragged off to the country jail. Why? Because I realize the consequences that shall result should I take that action.

We live in a society in which nobody really wants to take responsibility nor do they want to acknowledge their actions as being "wrong and ill construed" when in fact they are. You are solely responsible for everything that you say or do - if you keep that in mind you will not find yourself in quite so much trouble.

The same goes for Whistler - I should know because afterall I am a beta tester.

Why should it be the ISP's problem? They only provide the connection, not the content. By that same logic it seems rather short sighted to turn around and say they must secure your computer from the content you choose.

The term "Personal Computer" means just that - a personal computer. But when you place that computer at a pernament address on the internet - you are taking your chances and it is YOUR responsbility to minimize those chances.

Example: Lets say you buy a new mailbox and leave it sitting on your kitchen table inside your house. Well after a few weeks it becomes apparent that the mailbox is fairly useless without access to the outside world (aka the internet) so you place it on your front lawn and begin to send and receive mail.

So whats happens when some punk kid starts swiping social security checks from mailboxes? Hmmmmmm..... yeah it's illegal but would you even consider blaming the US Postal Service for something that is obviously your problem?(Solution: get a PO Box)

People need to start taking responsiblity. If you have a pernament, fast connection to the internet take the extra time to learn a little about computer security. If you dont want to care about it, or if you cant fathom opening a book and actually finding out just how your computer works, or you are one of those dimwits who actually paid money for an emachine - unplug the network connection NOW.

They certainly arent comparing operating systems - there are way too many differences in this case to do that objectively. Next time somebody runs benchmarks between the two OSes, please try to keep the following things in mind:

    (1) USE THE SAME HARDWARE! I cannot stress this point enough. What you people may call minor differences may often have a MAJOR effect on the outcome of a benchmark such as this.

    (2) Use the same Webserver Software. How in gods name can you blame or claim any of these benchmarks on the operating system? Both are using completely different HTTP servers (one which is isnt even publically available and shouldn't have been used = TUX). If you want a legitimate operating system benchmark and not and HTTP server benchmark - try to compare Win2k running Apache for NT and Linux running Apache. Otherwise climb off your high horses right now - these are webserver benchmarks NOT OS benchmarks. I for one will say that Apache for NT consumes a lot less memory than IIS 5.0 - though on my small intranet site I've yet to notice any speed difference.

Its obvious that whatever sense of objectivity Slashdot once had (if ever) has long been lost to the horde of pre-pubescent teenagers who only have one goal: To get something for nothing.

So there you go - take it or leave it - I dont really care. You may either post a reply or email one to darkgamorck@home.com

  22. Goodbye GPL! on GPL To Be Tested In Court? · · Score: 1

Well I already know this wont be a popular opinion - but here goes: I sincerely hope GPL is blown to millions of tiny bits and pieces in court. It's completely beyond my comprehension how you GPL bandwagon people have the ignornance to be able to refer to yourselves as the so-called "Free Software Foundation". How sad. Has everybody here forgotten just want kind of government we all live and work under here? Hmmmmm.... I believe its called Capitalism. Yeah thats the form of government the puts food on your table, pipes electricity into your computers, and actually gives you guys the freedom to write and support an archaic, overburdened, slow, and painfully difficult to use Operating System known as Linux. I also find it extremely amusing that you people refer to everything put out under GPL as "Open Source". GPL is NOT OPEN SOURCE. For a program to be truly open source - the source code must be redistributable without any restrictions. It must also be able to be modified and used in any way, shape, and form without ANY RESTRICTIONS. In otherwords OPEN SOURCE should = PUBLIC DOMAIN SOURCE But sadly enough this is not the case. The anarcists behind the FSF (yes that includes Richard Stallman) have decided that they want to protect their software and source code and they have done this by creating a license which acts more as a virus than anything else. Ask yourselves - who in gods name would want to steal your source code? Microsoft? Thats a good laugh. Ms Win2K uses less memory, runs a HELL of alot faster, and for the most part is MORE STABLE, and not only that - but its TEN MILLION TIMES EASIER to use than Linux. "Oh but people who use easy software are wimps" - well you pre-pubescent children have a long way to go then. Some people actually want to get something done and dont get too much of a kick out of learning cryptic commands such as ls, pwd, grep, vi, and other junk..... Okay guys - now Im prepared for the onslaught. Call the rest of your linux groupies and prepare to show me just how mature you guys are. Just to show you that I actually want to hear your brainwashed dribble - my updated email addy is: darkgamorck@home.com By the way - how many of you have been to slashdotsucks.net - its a great site. Also - a question: "Isn't it interesting how linux users have become even more fanatical than yuppie MACINTOSH user community in such a short period of time?" Gam

  23. Linux 2 Win2k Convert on Microsoft Windows 2001 Beta Slips Out · · Score: 1

I find it absolutely amazing at how many of you people come off sounding like squabbling siblings whenever we touch on the M$ vs. Linux debate. The fact is, W2k is a MAJOR improvement over previous versions in terms of stability and useablity. As I stated in the title, I used to be a major user of Linux in its various forms. (Ever since RH 4 - though I like Slackware better) I used to be like quite a few of you and I hated everything that Microsoft did - most of the time for no reason at all. But then I decided to try and start beta testing Windows 2000 (way back when it was NT 5.0 Beta 2) and let me tell you: Windows has come a VERY long way. You guys can go on ALL day about the 65,000 bugs or the fact there arent many "official" windows 2000 cert applications yet (Fact is: Almost EVERYTHING works much better - this includes ALL my games). Ever since Beta 3 - I have NEVER seen a BSOD and I dont expect to see one anytime soon. I've been using W2k at work on my personal machine (Compaq 380 mhz - 128 megs) and it does dual duty as the companies intranet server (Apache of course - M$ needs to do a bit more work on IIS before I jump on that one) and as a VB/PERL development platform for internal applications. Reboots are a thing of the past. Also, I hear alot of you making mention of Windows 2000 memory usage. (It uses around 50 megs just sitting there after boot). Have any of you idiots checked the memory usage on KDE or GNOME with X lately? Its far higher than that.... Perhaps my most important point: Linux is simply NOT ready for desktop use. You guys can spin it anyway you want to, but you'll never convince me otherwise - it has a LONG way to go. (Hint: Users aren't up for compiling their own apps and since half the precompiled ones dont work on different distribs....) Speaking of which, have any of you noticed another distributing trend in the world of Linux lately? The fact is, like it or not, Linux distributions are slowly splitting off and becoming more and more incompatible with one another as time goes on. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Its the same thing that happened to the different versions of unix when they first came out oh so long ago. And while Im on my soapbox - another thing: Alot of you guys have been saying that Win2k/WinNT installations are so insecure compared to linux. This is NOT a function of the OS (with the exception of DOS attacks). Like it or not, security in both OSes is a function of the administrator and from what I have seen most MCSEs wouldn't know what a security problem was if it slapped them in the face. Default installations of linux distributions are just as insecure as default Windows NT/2000 installations just in different ways. :-) (All you MCSEs heres a hint: DISABLE NETBIOS PORTS 135-139 OVER THE INTERNET,install the IIS hotfixes, and enforce strong passwords - that will solve 99% of your security issues) You'll notice I didn't include Windows 98 here - because its security REEKS. Can you say WinNUKE? So in essence, I encourage each of you to actually try and USE windows 2000 before downplaying as yet another step in M$s quest for world domination. Besides, the only true way you can present an intelligent opinion on the subject is if you have tried both - and I dont mean betas. I mean release versions. Feel free to flame me, Gamorck

I hate to ruin the wonderful M$ bashing party here but here is the way things are: Linux is great. Its stable, reliable, and it makes for a wonderful http/ftp server. Great. The problem is that it seems to have become some sort of religion. I mean honestly.... you guys are starting to sound like the same people who cheer on Steve Jobs' every year at MacWorld. The fact is Windows has got Linux beat on ONE THING: Its FREAKING EASY TO USE! Believe me, before I took my current job as a Net Admin, I was all about "linux will one day rule the world and MS is going to DIE" However, around that time I got my hands on win2k and my new job - needless to say the combination of the two have greatly changed my opinions. (I've got people who can't even move or resize a damn window in win98 - isnt that sad? Yeah I see them hacking away at a CLI interface on a linux box ) I cant help but wonder how many of you M$ bashers have actually USED win2k. I would say 10 percent at most. The fact is, it is VERY stable, VERY fast, and massive code base or not - it still doesnt take up as much memory as Xfree86 running KDE or Gnome. Now I realize this message will probably be classified as flamebait, but thats okay. Feel free to email me at: gamorck@home.com Im prepared to receive the punishment I have brought upon myself :-) The morale of the story here is: Don't Knock it before you try it. Try to give the competition a fair chance before you rein up your horse and scream to high heaven like a bunch of banshees. They say it takes 10 years for an OS to "mature". Windows is close to that point and I believe that Win2k is a massive step up from previous versions. Speed tests at my last job (writing data conversion programs) indicate around a 33% speed increase from previous versions of windows. By the way - AMD rules :-) My regards to you all, Jay (Gamorck)

I may not 100% agree with him this time - but I did enjoy his rampant speculation - its nice to sit up and think every once in awhile :-)

I've read a few comments which indicate that information is not organic - and therefore not governed by organic laws - well that is and is not the case.

The information being reffered to in this case is under the direct control of these "organic entities" and using simple logic it is possible to deduce that in fact this information can and will be affected by these organic laws.

The information may not be directly affected by this so-called "evolution" of the media - but we as a race will be.

And as the information we seek continues to shape and evolve our consciousness - then isn't it likely that other pieces of information will evolve (aka change) to reflect those differences?

    Just a thought...
