I believe the acronym Verizon uses is MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office).
Actually network equipment vendors are getting pretty close to 60Gbps backplane speeds for individual line-cards.Both Cisco, with it's76xx series, and Force10, with it's Exxx series, currently offer line-cards with 40Gbps switching capacity.Regards.
