  1. Re:Nothing new under the sun... on Tanya Grotter and the Magic Double Bass · · Score: 1

heresy is something different than not following God or being an atheist, buddhist or whatever. The early gnostics were willfully pursuing their own version of Jesus which was not based on what the apostles were saying was true of him at all. Heresy is usually defined as people who call themselves christians but do not follow orthodox chrisitanity (JWs, Mormons, etc). Heretics, non believers, Jews have all faced oppression at the hands of the church but by reading the bible its quite clear this isn't something God wants from us. We aren't required to say that someone else's viewpoint is legitimate but we are required to love them even though they love the darkness (John 3).

  2. Re:Why WOULD you use classes and objects? on PHP MySQL Website Programming · · Score: 1

The way in which classes are implemented in PHP makes it very unlikely that you suffer much of a performance hit for using them. We use them at work and from playing around with them they are really just structs with methods attached to them there isn't support for some of the features that you might think would cause performance problems. PHP is not a language you use if you care all that much about performance anyway.

Sometimes its easy to keep track of state in a class and while you can do this without classes by using sessions it sometimes is just easier to express what you want to do in terms of a class.

The things which cause java problems for performance have less to do with its OO nature and more to do with its use of a JIT; which in itself wouldn't be a problem but Sun has not been that interested in performance from what I can tell.

Uh... from the article RMS states that:

That term is a catch-all, covering copyrights, patents, trademarks, and other disparate legal systems; they are so different, in the laws and in their effects, that any statement about all of them at once is almost surely foolish. To think intelligently about copyrights, patents or trademarks, you must think about them separately.

It sounds to me like you read what you wanted to and skipped over the rest he doesn't state his opinion on them as a whole nor does he use the term to discuss anything because its too general. He isn't expecting anyone to agree with him, he's just saying if you're smart you won't over generalize and that's true.

How many more years until we just give up on him?

Why do we keep listening to RMS?

Hopefully we never will because free software should be our goal. You should listen to your roots because if you don't you might forget yourself. In this case forgetting yourself means promoting GNU/Linux until its popular enough for people to make commerical applications for it and being content with that...a free platform on which you can run a lot of non free software...I have to ask what is the point of that? Why not just use windows if you use one piece of non-free softwrae its just as bad as using all non-free software in my opinion. Go install windows if that is what you want...as for me I'm happy with my freedom and with GNU/Linux, the free software movement, RMS and all :-) Best wishes, SisterRay

Maybe there is a good reason why their patches are being ignored...they might suck. Instead of asking Slashdot perhaps you should be asking the kernel development mailling list.

I really don't understand why if Microsoft really thinks Linux sucks as much as it does, why do they bother even talking about it?

The fact is that Linux doesn't suck. In recent benchmarks Linux 2.4 running Tux completely blew away Windows...even on lesser hardware. They know this and they also know that the /. crowd seems to care whenever someone at Microsoft says "linux".

When do we grow up people? This is foolish, how long will it be before we just don't care about such things. While, it is good to question your convictions, would reading something that Microsoft says about Linux change your mind about your operating system of choice. I mean come on!

So instead of caring about this bs, go out and write some code, submit bug reports, or just use Gnu/Linux...whatever you want to do...just don't waste time with this stuff. Please.

  6. Re:Why not? on Is Linus Killing Linux? · · Score: 1

I guess the problem is that linux will fork like unix did and that's a problem for a lot of people. While it seems ideal hardware support becomes more difficult considering how much the interfaces in the kernel change with each new release. Maybe in 5-6 years when that stuff doesn't change then sure forking won't be an issue really.

Until someone has a real issue with something he is doing then this is really just a non issue, I personally don't see a problem with how things are going. Things are great now, why mess with it unless there is a problem? Linus didn't support the devfs inclusion but he eventually did include it after public opinion was against him on the issue(this is just how I understand the issue, I freely admit that there could very easily have been other issues involved)

It's not like the system is non democratic, his stated policy that if what you submit is good, then it gets in. That's really how it should be. If IBM or Oracle want a bigger say simply because they're a large company then they miss the point of free software development, and I think and shouldn't be welcomed. I don't think they really think like this from and from what I'm reading from IBM, they seem pretty cool...I really have the feeling they are sincere about their commitments to linux, and regardless of their motives , they're not in it to take over the linux development process...nor do they really have a problem with Linus being in control.

I am an expert Super Smash Brothers player and I'm friends with people who all take the game VERY seriously. Anyway, we play every friday at one of the dorms at the university I attend.

I found that the more I attended these sessions which could last up to 5-6 hours at a time the better I did in my classes. I don't try at school normally...I enjoy school just grades aren't my thing I guess; but when I would play this game more I would do really well. My Bs and Cs would become As and A-s with no real additional effort involved. Weird, huh?

I would tell people about this and no one would believe me save one who offered me some advice: if your grades are better the more you play that game, you should just play it constantly...like 16 hours a day ;-)

I'm not sure if its really related to this whole thing but I think its a cute story anyway.

upload or download viruses, use anonymous e-mail

Well on the first point you shouldn't do that dum dum. If you really want to be uploading virii to plague mankind get an aol account.

view porno, post anything vulgar or hateful, you cant even encourage anything illegal.

If the first point is true then that's bad though I doubt that's true or possible to really monitor without looking at every .jpg .gif etc that comes through their service...it would waste everyone's time and resources to do this since there is no way to tell if a file is pr0n or not through automated means...basically you would have to visually inspect each file which would be rather stupid anyway. I figure this is here to be able to kick the kiddie pr0n freaks off if they're discovered.

The hate stuff well again they could search for things like "the n word" and what not but again I doubt they'll do this...and encouraging illegal activity is against the law anyway as far as I'm aware...encouraging someone to go kill someone usually gets you in trouble...I could be wrong about this though...can someone help me out here?

Lastly, they restrict you from sending out spam,

Well good if you want to send out spam buddy then you don't deserve to be in the human community let alone the internet one...

They also reserve the right to enter your home or property, monitor your activities, and "share" your personal info with other companies.

Well, your phone company has the right to enter your home, so does your electric company, etc. The difference here is if you don't want the sprint people in your house then you cancel your service...somehow I doubt they're gonna want to come over for tea four nights a week. As far as sharing goes yeah that stinks but that's life if you don't like it complain to them and don't use it...just because a service is available doesn't mean you have to use it :-)

  9. This doesn't look like a serious "fork"... on Samba Code Fork Announced · · Score: 1

I checked out the FAQ on the samba-tng site and I found something to be of interest:

TNG stands for 'The Next Generation'. At the time of writing, Samba TNG will never officially be released. It will be merged into the Stable Samba branch, which will become Samba 3. Samba TNG is not recommended for production use, but once it is working, you shouldn't see too many stability problems.

So, uh what's the big deal? If this code is just going to be merged into samba 3, then I'm not certain why this is relevant...besides the fact that having full w2k domain support under *nix is pretty cool for anyone who has to operate in a cross platform environment (most of us).

The problem with Asymmetric multi processing is that it limits the cpus ability to work together in any sense on a particular task. If one processor is working on instructions abcd and the other (slower one) is doing processes efg it would be difficult to predict when those instructions would get done. And thus things could get muddy in coordinated cpu tasks. Since I'm certain that AMD provides support for the lock x86 instruction then everything should be good(this is the instruction that makes certain that the cpux doesn't walk on cpuy's turf basically :-)

Interestingly enough the kernel code that supports SMP doesn't really care if there are varying speeds between the processors(this is true in linux at least). Anyway, the load should always go to the processor that can handle it best.

Anyway, I found that since I was using Gnapster and connecting to opennap network servers i wasn't being affected. I found a little program called napagator and gave it to a few people around my dorm and within a few weeks basically everyone was on again. Basically, students want napster and will find a way to get it. I don't think that Metallica realizes just how useless what they're attempting is.

Though I did enjoy the little bit in their letter to Harvard about how Napster would make it impossible to make money from their creative works...I would say that a recording contract basically does that, I'm not sure if Napster can take much more than a record company already does.

There are many sources out there to get good independent music. I would recommend going to: Artist Shop in order to get a better idea of what is out there. There is a company called Discipline Global Mobile that produces outstanding music and operates under a philosophy of *true* respect and cooperation with artists. They don't have contracts with their artists and they don't own the copyrights to their work so that the artist maintains their right to their work instead of some label owning it. While they make mainly terrible punk music, Epitaph records is an independent label that has some good artists on it...Tom Waits and Wayne Kramer (of the mc5) namely. For better punk music check out: Dischord Records. The owner of this label is in the band Fugazi and they're a truely amazing band that I would recommend to one and all.

It's nice to see that independent artists are getting some attention from a more mainstream audience in the wake of the general disgust the world seems to feel towards the RIAA. Independent labels have helped nuture less commerical bands that have often changed the way that music is defined. Bands like the velvet underground, king crimson, and joy division were all able to make an amazing contribution to music without the aid of a large record label.

In case you haven't already been;mp3.com is a good source of outstanding independent music. Anyway, I hope this helps someone find independent music that they enjoy...music is my passion in life and I love to help people find stuff that they might like :-) In all seriousness though, people should have been looking into this stuff *WAY* before the RIAA decided to go after Napster and for some reason started a boycott (one company sues another one and we side with the one because we honestly believe that they're 100% right in what they are doing or because they are giving us something we want...hm I wonder)...independent music was always there for you to hear if you were interested...or if you cared...

KDE is a nice desktop environment but the people who are behind it release Qt under their own license because of the fact that they don't want it to be free. If they would just release their code under the GNU GPL this would be over right now. But, I think since the people who work on the KDE project aren't interested in free software so much as one day making a dollar off of it that nothing will be resolved. The GNU GPL doesn't exclude making money from free software it just gives freedom to the user...which to me at least is the point of free software in the first place :-) I don't think that KDE should be made to do anything they don't want to do but I do think that they shouldn't be considered a free software project in the strictest sense of the word...see gnu.org for more information ;-)

So long as we have our high bandwidth, access to live streaming pr0n, and best of all AOLIM we don't need to care what our government is doing to this Iraqis or anyone else who isn't advanced enough to know the joy of AOLIM. Companies, government, society in general wants a citizen who is submissive and generally disassociated with everyday affairs of government. While it is possible that the Net will grow to allow citizens to become more active in politics and their own lives this is unlikely due to the submissive nature of people these days. I would suggest that while Net access is a wonderful thing, that its services need to include ways that people can easily organize against the PACs and special interest groups that represent everything bad about our republic. I don't know maybe I'm wrong this is just my opinion, but its one I value highly.
