  1. Re:Rear Ended on Google's Self-Driving Cars: 300,000 Miles Logged, Not a Single Accident · · Score: 1

I think what's really important here is whether or not the total realm of road safety is improved or not. Sure, maybe every once in a while something crazy like kids jumping over the road on bikes will happen and an accident will occur, but if that means that five other accidents did not occur, it's probably worth it.

This is also why a licensed driver will still need to be behind the wheel and sober, at least until the AI advances enough to be able to cover all possible driving scenarios. When you consider the percentage of drivers that probably don't know how to react to sliding or hydroplaning, or would panic in that situation and do the wrong thing, I think I'd feel much safer knowing that vehicles in my proximity are automated.

Inattentive drivers are scary, too. Think about all the times you may have nearly been hit by a driver writing a text message, or simply changing lanes without checking their blind-spot. Even worse, drivers don't even need to be inattentive to be terrible drivers. I used to live in a city where it seemed like people would wait for you to get close to the intersection they wanted to turn right at (this is in the US) before pulling out, rather than waiting for you to pass when there are absolutely no other drivers behind you.

I think quality is like temperature. You can measure heat but you can't measure cold (it's just low amounts of heat). Bad is just low amounts of quality, so saying "better" is like saying "warmer."

False. GNOME 2 was most certainly better than GNOME 3, and the metric used to measure quality is number of "what the fuck"s, "how the fuck"s, and "why the fuck"s per hour (lower is better).

In my personal opinion, Valve and game developers should focus on compatibility with maybe 2 distros at most (Ubuntu obviously and maybe one more common distro). Doing so would expose a large amount of Linux gamers to Steam and a greater Linux game selection on their primary OS, and users of other distros would most likely be more willing to dual boot with one of the chosen Linux distros rather than dual boot with Windows to get their gaming fix. This would also eliminate some of Valve and game developers' needs for fixing bugs and getting games to work properly on Linux, and would also lessen the load on driver vendors in getting solid gaming-quality performance from hardware.

From your anecdote it does not appear to be Sony that is adjusting their prices, but the store trying to sell you the unit. You came in expecting to purchase a $999 TV; the store wanted you to spend that $999. Otherwise it appears that a Sony TV comparable to the $999 Toshiba unit cost ~30% more. That is not an insignificant increase.

Why does this model need to change? While I understand there are developers that close shop every year because they can't sell enough copies of their games to keep up with rising production costs, there are still many developers selling millions of games per year. While other successful models are emerging, I don't think it necessitates the death of an established model that is still making money for publishers.

Sony screwed themselves over on the PSP with a general lack of good games. I foolishly purchased a PSP shortly after its release, bought and enjoyed Lumines, and then waited patiently for more good games to come out. Once I realized this was unlikely to happen, I cracked the PSP and used it as a portable SNES emulator. It didn't take long after that before I just sold it and purchased a DS.
