Hundreds of millions of people have been saved by technology. Look in any hospital: would it be there without computers? Probably. Would it be even 5% as efficient? Absolutely not.
Let's look at the computers which analyze patient data. They do it in three dimensions, point out warning signs, etc. All of this is stuff that humans cannot do! Computers can investigate images at much higher resolution and spit out every single warning for doctors to look into further.
Some people may say refrigeration was more important than computers. It was a prerequisite, but not as important. It saved the lived of about a million people (rough estimate) and before true electronic refrigeration, we've had iceboxen for the past 40,000 years. Refrigeration might've helped keep meat fresher, but computers save hundreds of lives every day and also are *fun* to play on. Refrigerators are not fun to play on, no matter how hard you try (don't, please:) ).
Any magazine who runs an article like this is obviously just going for the shock factor. "Hey, news is slow today! Let's run some fuzzy article on why technology sucks!" ------------
I am very close to the chipmaking operation of Intel and there are several things I've noticed about their process.
First of all, there is no central point of authority. The chip developers do not have a single way to add comments or say that a certain part is bad.
Secondly, the actual Fab plant where the chips are made in Albequerque, New Mexico is continually being constructed and it is __incredibly__ dusty around there. That is probably one of the contributing factors to the incredibly dirtiness of the plant.
Intel is a shoddy operation as far as I've seen it and I suggest to stay away until they have a bit better recent track record.
You're forgetting another problem that may occur to cause 99% of the Internet down. Hey, if I was a malicious criminal and I wanted to impact 300 million people relatively easily, I just cut some wires that carry data. Since most of the Internet traffic goes through the US (even if you're accessing a server in your own country (a country besides the US of course)), if you strategically cut maybe six or seven wires (I'm simplifying the cutting process, I'm sure the wires would need a chainsaw:P ) majority of Internet traffic would be cut off.
I don't mean to give terrorists any ideas... ------------
This is exactly why we need to do away with TLDs completely. We'd need an international non-governmental organisation to manage all of these TLDs. But the US would absolutely NOT give up their current monopoly on the Internet.
Also, when you have a TLD-based system and it is heavily policed, it a) creates more lawsuits, and b) companies can rename themselves "Microsoft Co-op" and they'd get a.coop (99% chance, even WITH heavy policing). Then they would send official-looking e-mail to everyone and we might have an ILoveYou+Melissa all over again.
What scares me even more is that if they don't agree with what you are doing, in a heavily policed and monitored TLD, can they take it away? I'm sure they will be able to, just as is happening on a much smaller scale right now with.com,.org, and.net. ------------
