The site's "shell server" was compromised May 22 after a SourceForge employee
logged on to an outside Internet service provider that had already been taken
over by the intruder, said Pat McGovern, site director of SourceForge.net. When
the staff member logged on to SourceForge remotely, the intruder captured the
password.
Well some of that is true, I mean I did trojan ssh but I did it about 5
months ago, so kudos to the admin you sir are awesome..
"What happened was the (ISP) was compromised and had not known it," McGovern
said, adding that the site's administrator quickly noticed the intruder and shut
systems down. "Basically we had to go through and rebuild the machine, and then
we checked the log file of everyone who used the machine."
hrm I guess that could also be considered true, if by true you mean, finding
out every box on your network is owned 5 months after the fact and only due to
my own boredom that consisted of me ircing it infront of the admin, by the way
good job of auditing your network, wait thats just too much sarcasm for one
sentence..
After the attack, VA removed the shell service until workers could reinstall
the software and data on the server. The shell server allowed SourceForge
members to type commands into the system remotely. On Thursday, the company
posted an alert that the shell server couldn't be used because of an
"unscheduled maintenance event."
It also allowed me to sniff my way onto apache.org and sourceforge webserver
and leave all sorts of goodies in the code..
In this case, they only got into a shell server," McGovern said.
Hey, theres no disputing that, I mean.. wait.. Whats this I'm defacing ?
The company also decided to shut down its "compile farm," a collection of
computers running different operating systems on which SourceForge developers
can test their software.
Why would they shut down other boxes, if only the shell server was hacked ?
Although illicit modifications to the programming projects are a concern,
McGovern said the intruder didn't get that far. oh come now, you're just
being silly..

Anyone find it funny that this story and the KGesture story were posted on the same day? It's an evil, vast corporate conspiracy to track our usage patterns even when we avoid the Evil Empire!
I think the RIAA is working really hard on trying to shoot themselves in the foot. By seeming to go after everyone and everything that doesn't play exactly the way RIAA wants them to play, people are going to get really tired of this big bully. It's one thing to go after people copying copyrighted songs, but to say it's a problem to let people have this level of customization? People are going to start seeing through the show they're putting on, all their claims, and see what they're really doing.
No, people are not getting tired of this big bully. We (the/.ers) and the rest of the technically-informed people are. But the people who support the RIAA (and MPAA) with money by buying CDs and movies don't know their practices. We need to inform them.
As much as we talk about how terrible they are, we are being hipocrites. We need to *educate* others about what these two conglomerates are doing for the betterment of our rights. ------------

Actually, there was someone a while ago who actually did go a whole month eating only Spam (the food, not the email crap). It was, of course, televised on Fox News and CNN.
When the month passed, he vowed never to eat spam again...he needed to go to a hospital to get liposuction because his arteries were filled up with spam (which is basically just pink-colored fat). ------------
eFront also bought one website I worked on (PCMech.com) and offered to buy another that I owned.
I warned the PCMech owner NOT to get associated with eF. All the other sites that eF bought (I knew a LOT of people in the webmaster community) were abused. Ads were put up (the popup kind), payments were late, and most of all the webmasters retained NO control. Strict guidelines were set up to stop them from seeing their OWN stats just so eF could make up their own numbers!
Lowtax (webmaster of SomethingAwful) is now part of eF (and not just a siteowner). hE's trying to make things better. I sure hope he can, or a HUGE percentage of everyone's fav sites will be screwed (PA, SA, PCMech, etc etc). Wish him good luck. ------------

Uhh, I think Inoshiro, K5's admin, stated everyone's general opinion quite well. From #kuro5hin on SlashNET...
CL: Now, since Perl 6 is going to be developed under more organized way, do you expect it to live longer? (Of course, I don't mean Perl 5 is dead, though.)
LW: One of the proposals, one of the RFCs was that Perl 6 should be the last version of Perl. The idea is that if we make Perl 6 sufficiently flexible, then there's no need for Perl 7, because you can always bend the full language into whatever you want it to be.
This poses an interesting question. Once the language can do everything in a sense that it was meant to do (everything but operating systems, pretty much) do you discontinue development? Or do you still tweak it for as much speed as possible? What happens if the enviroment of computers changes enough that perl is just not apt to handling it in its latest version?
Flamewars aside, I don't think that perl development will stop. If Larry Wall stops developing it, then the rest of the perl development group will jump on.
I know I'm going to get modded down for this, but I'd like to hear some other's opinions.
