  1. How about 7 languages? on Quadrilingual Crazy Programming · · Score: 5, Informative
    What about the famous Polyglot?

It runs/compiles under 7 languages: ANSI COBOL, ISO Pascal, ANSI Fortran, ANSI C, PostScript, Shell Script, and 8086 machine language!!! Check it out, it rocks.

  2. You People Don't Get It on Micropayments: Effective Replacement For Ads Or ? · · Score: 1
From what I've seen already, with micropayments, you don't HAVE to pay to see the content.

The micropayment system is a type of honor system. Some think of it as a type of "tip-cup" system. If you find site xyz.com's content super-helpful, funny, etc. Or you visit daily, etc, etc, why not pay $.50 a month, or maybe a whole dollar!

For example, I really like PA's content, thus, I'm willing to chuck a dollar their way every month. With their volume, if even a third of their viewers did this, they'd have more than enough cash to stay afloat! I'd pay a buck a month for /. too. Why not? For all of their bandwidth I use, they might as well have a dollar of mine!

As far as current methods of micropaying, Amazon.com has their Honor System, and there's always PayPal. I don't really like Amazon's though, because they take a cut, but I suppose they have to cover costs. But dang, you can't go wrong with PayPal.

  3. Dreamcast has a SNES emulator on Whatever Happened To SNES Emulators For The Playstation? · · Score: 1
Not exactly on-topic, but there has been a release of an emulator called "Sintendo" for the Dreamcast which, AFAIK, is a port of SNES9X.

You can find it's homepage here: http://sintendo.dcwarez.com/

Works pretty good, some games run a little slow, but then it's still in a very early release phase.

Just FYI, in Lain, (I forget which episode, it was an early one,) Lain's hacking away in school on her little personal Navi, and if you go frame-by-frame you see she's programming in Lisp...

  5. USB Ethernet NICs on Flat Panel Linux Box for $99? · · Score: 1
Are there supported USB ethernet devices under linux?

On http://www.usbstuff.com/network.html there's a 3Com USB NIC, which would probably be my best guess as a supported device.

If this would work, and you could get decent speed across it (anything's better than a modem IMO,) why fiddle around with parallel networking, or trying to hack an old ISA card where the modem is (provided that the modem _is_ connected via ISA...)

  6. Palm Pilot + OmniRemote = Your Answer on The Do-It-All Remote? · · Score: 1

If you have a PalmPilot of some sort (I have a IIIe,) get OmniRemote, it is a God-Send. You draw all your own buttons, how you want them, you can even set up multiple "remotes", ie, different screens which you can draw any amount of buttons on you want.

To program these buttons you simply point your remote at the palms IR port, push the button on the remote, and bam, a button on OmniRemote now does what your remote does.

And hey, at $20, this is shareware you can afford, and will use for a LONG time!

  7. Just a mistake I'm guessing on Amazon.com Hosting Crypto-Contest · · Score: 1

If you search Amazon for "Harry Potter" you come up with a bunch of kids books, and there actually was a "Harry Potter Magical Candy Contest" put on by Amazon a while back -- so this is either the deadest of hints, OR just a mixup on the part of their web developers...

  8. Arrrg on Java-Clone Announced · · Score: 1

I remember hearing rumors of this a while back. I also remember when the guys at Sun came up with Java. And despite my personal opinions on Java, I thought that is was very cool that you could easily write Java code and use it anywhere on any machine -- not just one using Windows. So, outside of Microsoft adding tons of their own "features" to the language, what's the point? Just to really aggitate us? It's gotta be... :-)

  9. Isn't this the CD^3? on $300 portable MP3 CD player · · Score: 1

I remember reading earlier on Slashdot about the CD^3, a CD-based MP3 player developed mainly by a small group of college students. They were making the CD^3 as a college senior project. The description in the article sure does sound like the CD^3, especially with the touch-screen panel, and the table they provide comparing it to conventional CD's, MiniDiscs, and analog tapes, I mean, it looks exactly like the table that was on the CD^3 web page back when I was keeping up on it...

Anybody know if the CD^3 guys finally found someone to buy up their product? I'm guessing it could be these people.

Oh, something I didn't catch in the article, if it IS the CD^3, it's run on Linux!!!

    Gotta go...

  10. GNOME woo's on Enlightenment 0.15 · · Score: 1

Now, I wish I could GET GNOME to even compile! I swear, I've never had such a hard time... I had to (again) install tons of new libraries, and such, and heck, with just trying to configure the gnome-libs package, it always ended up crying about me having an old version of libz somewhere. I've scoured my system, and I only have version 1.1.3 of libz in one location, which should be fine, and bla bla bla bla bla...

I finally said forget it, I need to work on more important things, like getting my printer working. :-)

You know, that's a great idea! Only problem is, Rob would somehow need to afford the extra bandwidth, and I imagine there's got to be some sort of copyright problems with doing that w/o permission, and gaining permission would take time, and make the whole slashdot thing a little less cool. :-)

And hey, what about all those people who have studied, and wrote about the blitzkreig-/. effect? By mirroring all those sites, you'd reduce, or defeat the whole purpose of Slashdot! :-D

    Take it easy, all!

I _FINALLY_ get alllll the stuff I needed (had to upgrade and install a bunch of new libraries first off,) and I get it all running, I crank up Enlightenment for the first time, default setup, I decide to hit Slashdot, and THIS happens! Actually it's a better ratio than that, but we're still not like most universities... :-) Oh well, I guess I'm supposed to be here for the education anyway. :-)
