  1. Re:Work Experience on Go For a Masters, Or Not? · · Score: 1

    A lot of universities and college actually offer field specific degrees with a teaching add-on. I picked out a fine Poli Sci degree with teaching add-on, and towards the end of the course work the Praxis I was administered, which sets up for Praxis II post-graduation and full teaching qualification up to high school. (My plan's to use it to teach while I work on a master's program, and then move up to college academia and instruct bachelor programs while moving towards a PhD.) Although from experience moving up the IS rank and file to management, there's a lot put into experience when you've got it to offer on top of a degree as opposed to "Oooh, I've got a bigger degree and less experience". Specially in a receeded market.

    You can actually farm the work out through temp agencies and such sometimes too, since they generally have the ability to get background checks done for temps that have to be bonded or certified as "safe" before they're deployed to a company. It's what my company does because it's cheaper to get a bill from them for the background check, than it is to pay someone else to do it ourselves.

    I don't think anyone was inferring this as an illegal background check method though parent. Girls google guys they've met and they're thinkin about datin to see what comes up. Sometimes it's a metric of if you're someone or not, since the more you've published and done, would show up on teh Google device. Just don't tell them your name is donkey porn.

    C) most employers tend to have a background check done on you along with the pre-screen nonsense too.

    Although, that said, if they're creepy enough to be e-stalking you, they'd click through the link to only find out it wasn't you. No issue there.

  4. Charter still sucks, even with new paint. on Charter Launches 60 Mbps Service · · Score: 1

    Completely unsure how Charter is in the rest of the country, but in this part of VA, Charter's a joke. Their pole wiring is maybe up to par with Cox or Comcast like, 15 years ago. They've let the network fall to poo so badly and failed to update the network, that Cox, who bought up a few small change cable systems in the area, won't even touch it because it's going to be in excess of 10 mil just to bring it up to par with the rest of the region's network. Even if Paul Allen shoots magical flying monkeys out of his bunghole, I'll never use Charter for anything other than the punchline to a joke.

    Don't forget the frivolous lawsuits brought on by the hotel industry for inciting "mass widespread theft of soap and televisions from hotel and extended stay rooms". Then we'll take him round back and fire a round off in his general direction.

    What about stealing the pillows? Is that like downloading an entire artist's discography or something?

  6. Outsource it to Indian callcenters instead! on US CTO Choice Down To a Two-Horse Race · · Score: 1

    That'd work out best for government accountability. You'd call the IRS, and you'd get "Ted" from India. Then the next day, you'd call back and recognize him and say "hey Ted, I talked to you yesterday", only for him to say today he's Ralph and there's no Ted that works there. And the e-mails would be a complete misdirection play. If only Dubya had come up with this plan, no one would have caught on until he'd ran out of the White House with the china and the desk from the Oval Office.

  7. Re:Oil == Crack on Transrapid (MagLev) Test Successful In China: 405 · · Score: 1

    Actually, there's a MagLev being built at a Virginia university. It's actually done now, and they've been doing final testing and permit junk for a few months. The initial release put out by Old Dominion University is at http://web.odu.edu/webroot/orgs/sci/colsciences.ns f/pages/6maglev . Their general info is http://www.odu.edu/af/maglev/ .

    And a painful increase in the price of oil isn't going to change much, since the safety record of locomotive trains (Thanks Amtrack!) is to a point where it dissuades people from feeling safe on 'em. Not to mention the outrageous pricing of train fare itself. MagLev's at least cleaner than the railroad alternative to boot.

    Actually, their lame offer for 307 million, compared to @Home's debts of around 1 billion didn't even come close to cutting it. *just to clarify the stupidity of AT&T* .. Reason I thought it was hilarious the first thing after the order comes through is "Aight. Unhook those smartasses at AT&T. let them deal with their customer".. Also amusing AT&T has "already" migrated 500,000 customers, when 850,000 were cut off. So when are they going to "migrate" the other 350,000 that don't have cable modem access? That's not migrating last time *I* checked.

    Landmark Communications has overstretched themselves and tried to dip thier hands in too many pools anyways. In June of 2000 they cut the entire ISP division of InfiNet, a Landmark company, and have since trimmed down their newspaper hosting facilities , and don't seem to be faring well when it comes to employee retention.

    So, anyone looking to buy a business? Call Landmark. ^_^
