    Which 3D problem?
    OpenGL is the standard, and most new Mac's support it.
    The only problem is, that some software uses non standard techniques like DirectX.

    About Firewire : Intel is one of the licenseholders.
    USB 2.0 is a poor technology.
    Instead of trusting the jobs (copying etc.) to the devices, USB 2.0 relies on the processor to access devices.
    This means huge processorloads, firewire is better.
    Next, USB 2.0 has the same fee as USB 1.0 namely $ 0,25 a machine.
    The pricing is the same as firewire.
    Only difference is that Intel is getting the full $ 0,25 instead of the $ 0,25 / /7 which Apple, Sony, JVC, Motorola and Intel are getting for Firewire.

    Ever tried to install MacOS on a Mac?
    That's how to install an OS.
    Put in the CD and double click on the installer icon.
    That's it.
    And you can do a "clean" install which replace your old system folder with a new one and leaves a backup of your old system folder on your disk.

    The frequency used with Airport is an European standard which was signed by al EG member states inluding France.
    We had the same problem here in The Netherlands three years ago.
    The problems is that a goverment can't forbid use of those frequencies because it is a European standard.
    And they signed them!!!

    USB licenses is $ 0,25 a port.
    This $ 0,25 goes directly to Intel.
    The $ 0,25 which is asced by the Firewire group is split in 11 pieces.
    Not Apple's fault.

    This is what Apple is trying to do with netboot.
    The server is only a "online" disk.
    The programs are running on the clients.

    The current MacOS can only address 1 Gb of memory.
    But this is going to change in MacOS X.
    The maximum memory every G2 Mac (7500,7300,8500,7600,8600,9500,9600) and G3 Mac (G3, G3bw, iMac, G3series powerbook, G4) supports is 4 Gb.
    This is going to rise to 1 Tb when Apple is going to switch to the G5 which is 64 bits.

    Apple is not the only company making PPC machines.
    IBM is doing this for years (RS6000, AS400) and Bull is making large computers with 24 PPC chips.
    Don't forget that Motorola is one of the biggest CPu firms.
    They make more CPU's than Intel.
    The problem is that only 7% of all cpu's are used in PC's. The rest is used in embedded systems, printers and a lot of other stuff including F16's.

    Be made a big mistake.
    The G3's and G4's are straight forward design based ont the MPC106 "Crackle" chip.
    The specs and a reference design can be found on the Motorola site.
    If you take a look at the design of the iMac you'll see that they kept everything very simple.
    The only part that Apple did design themselve is the Paddington I/O controler which is based on the Heathtrow I/O chip.
    The problem is, that Be didn't wanted to do their homework.
    The basic design of the G3 (beige), iMac, Wallstreet, Lombard and G3 bw is the same.
    They all use a MPC106 chip and a Paddington or Heathrow I/O chip.

    The G3 is 1.3 times faster with integer compared to a Pentium II with the same clock.
    With FP there is not much different
    The FPU-unit of the G4 is 2 times faster than the FPU-unit inside the G3.
    There is a prototype 604e(v) machine with 24 processors each clocked at 300 Mhz..
    This machine runs MacOS 8.6.
    AltiVec is very kewl, and is 128 bits with 32 independent registers.
    MMX is a crap..

    That's why Motorola's fabs are outside the USA.
    And Apple assembles Mac's in Ireland and Singapore.
    No problems with exportlaws in those countries.

    Concerning vectorwork, would a G4 with Altivec solve al to of problems....
    What i've heard Altivec is a superfast vector unit in the G4 series processors and it should deliver a lot of processing power...

    Hmm, very simple.
    First, they didn't compile SMP support in.
    Second, the Dell server they've used has a buildin ethernetchip from 3COM.
    This chip (3C905b) isn't very good, and the Linuxdriver can't get more than 3,5 Mbyte/sec out of this chip.
    If they had used a PCI-card with an Digital 2114* the results for the Linuxserver would been 1,5 times better than those for the NT server.

    Very simple.
    The Dell Poweredge uses a 3C905(b) ethernet chip.
    The Linux driver sucks qua performance.

    Underperforming....
    It blows most Wintel crap right out of the water.
    An iMac with linux is as fast as a Celeron 300a at 300 Mhz.
    And if you look at the price of it nowadays, it's is cheaper than a similary configured Wintelbox.

    Darwin is a big step forward.
    I think it will be very simpel to run Xwindows on it.
    And people that are complaining about the policy to not include the GUI are forgetting that you have to pay for Motif too.
