If your distribution detects all the hardware, great. But a lot of people who buy a PC and then change out the operating system end up finding out that a piece of hardware connected to the PC is unsupported in the other operating system. When you buy a ready-made winbox, you at least know that it comes with drivers for the included hardware, no HCL checking needed.
I have seen many PC's and laptops (HP comes to mind, maybe others as well), where its virtually impossible to install Windows from a stock image. You NEED to use the version they give with the pre loaded drivers. And, you wont get drivers for any version of windows other than the one they come with at all.
Ubunty/Linux Mint however install without any issues
It is difficult to find *any* monitors with a resolution higher than 1920*1080 (with the exception of 2 models, 1 by Dell another by Apple)
Infact the highest resolution Dell lists on their website is 1920*1080, with the exception of a 30inch 2560*1600 monitor (http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~topic=ultrasharp_monitor)
The slightly different option is to default to only installing through the App store with an option for users to turn that off, perhaps in the Accounts section of System Preferences. This gives a compromise where people on Slashdot can use whatever method they want and naive users will be much more protected.
Maybe Nokia has a patent on that since Symbian(s60) phones use that method only..
If/when people use chrome OS, they would have to use Google Docs, which may have driven other people who use MS office to use Google Docs or openoffice.(when they share their files)
Now, if people migrate to Chrome OS, they will still be able to use the familiar MS office file formats

Yes, but doesnt using google like that unnecessarily increase the load on their servers?
Isnt it kind of like abusing Google Search?

"long" monitors meaning?
I thought the ratios moved from 4:3 or 5:4 ->16:10 -> 16:9
were there monitors with 9:16 like ratios earlier?
yea.. missed that
got used to thinking of non wide monitors as 4:3
even then, 1920*1200 monitors (16:10) have been replaced by 1920*1080 (16:9) ones
Kind of a nice way to offset the loss of vertical pixels as monitors move from 4:3(1280*1024) to 16:10(1280*800) to 16:9(1366*768)..
They'll just turn the entire country into a prison, with some areas demarcated for those who have been proven innocent

I mean it was intended to be a joke, but people took it seriously somehow :)
The former
Android vs Blackberry
or the old s60 could be considered as being somewhere in between
Isnt there a way to digitise HAM radio, encapsulate it and transmit it over IP?
HAM over IP would be the solution to most of the interference problems
A shiny, insecure UI will always be more popular than a Plain, secure one
So, when does the B ship leave?
Maybe humans will adapt to space life / life on the spacecraft better in the 300000 years on the spacecraft
OK, so how is this different from censorship?
