If your distribution detects all the hardware, great. But a lot of people who buy a PC and then change out the operating system end up finding out that a piece of hardware connected to the PC is unsupported in the other operating system. When you buy a ready-made winbox, you at least know that it comes with drivers for the included hardware, no HCL checking needed.

I have seen many PC's and laptops (HP comes to mind, maybe others as well), where its virtually impossible to install Windows from a stock image. You NEED to use the version they give with the pre loaded drivers.
And, you wont get drivers for any version of windows other than the one they come with at all.

Ubunty/Linux Mint however install without any issues

It is difficult to find *any* monitors with a resolution higher than 1920*1080 (with the exception of 2 models, 1 by Dell another by Apple)

Infact the highest resolution Dell lists on their website is 1920*1080, with the exception of a 30inch 2560*1600 monitor (http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/sna.aspx?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~topic=ultrasharp_monitor)

The slightly different option is to default to only installing through the App store with an option for users to turn that off, perhaps in the Accounts section of System Preferences. This gives a compromise where people on Slashdot can use whatever method they want and naive users will be much more protected.

Maybe Nokia has a patent on that since Symbian(s60) phones use that method only..
