Also, if you just sit down with one for over an hour, you'll see what I mean. Try taking a tiny pocket knife and comparing it to a machete. Yes, they're both shaped the same and cut stuff, but trying to hack down vines and brush with a pocket knife is idiotic. Likewise, an iPod might "be able" to do what an iPad can, it's simply impractical, painful, and unintuitive (much like using a machete to slice onions.)

Your "list" boils down to: they're "based" on the same OS, and the iPad is "compatible" with iPod apps. The size increase has a two fold impact: first, the screen is "also" the UI. While the iPod is best operated with your thumbs (and maybe one of your index fingers) the iPad lets you use all of your fingers at once. Second, the screen real-estate lets developers put a lot more on screen, which opens the doors to entirely different UI interactions.

The difference could also be compared to Windows Mobile and a desktop running Win7. Yes, Windows Mobile looks similar to desktop Windows, complete with a start bar, but it's nearly impossible to imagine writing a book in Windows Mobile. From the small buttons that are hard to hit, to the tiny screen, the entire experience just "doesn't fit" with certain tasks. Likewise, iPods and iPads have similarities, but the difference is just as drastic between WinMobile5 and Win7.

People could have dismissed color TV as hype as well. Just because an accusation is easy to make, doesn't make it true. Having actually spent some time with an iPad (though I don't own one) I had to admit it really is a unique device. It's no more an "overblown iPhone" than a desktop computer is a "paper back book." Netbooks showed that our current way of doing things is severely outdated. Apple seems to have noticed this trend, and actually taken time to redesign the way we use computers on a daily basis. I'm personally waiting for the gPad -- I refuse to buy an Apple product, actually -- but they do get kudos for the iPad.

Actually this move makes a lot of sense. Microprocessors aren't pricey because of materials, they're pricey because of the research and development required to make them. Now they can have less manufacturing lines, and charge for the tech accordingly. The other option is to manufacture an outdated chip (which will require similar priced materials) and sell for less because R&D has been covered by previous sales. This just cuts that step out, and manufactures a single chip and then charges for R&D accordingly. Notice how Microsoft Office 2003 is cheaper than 2010? Same concept.

After further usage, the response time appears to be based on your browser's response rate. I was at a McDonald's yesterday with a nice hefty connection; Due to some background processes the computer slowed down, which seemed to trigger a switch to classic mode. That didn't have anything to do with the ISP, or even the download rates, just the response time from the current *window.* So, I'm going out on a limb here and saying you made that up as a hypothetical shortcoming of the system and claimed to have experienced it yourself.

And if it seems fishy I just "happened" to have made this discovery: I'm big on tech stuff, I was showing GInstant to some friends and seeing how it behaved on different connections. (I also got duped by PeterAnswers.com, which is awesome.)

As with Satellite Internet promising "broadband speeds," HSPA+ is promising "4G speeds." The drawback to both is latency. The most impressive part of 4G networks is the extremely low latency, which could enable versatile online gaming. For those of you not familiar with latency, it's the amount of time it takes for a device to send a request and receive a response. If that request is telling someone you just shot them in the face with your double barrel shotgun, then latency is a huge issue.

You're suggesting world class Engineers just happened to overlook redundant HTML formatting data? No, they didn't. Check your bandwidth usage (seriously, watch your network usage as you're typing for results. It's very small.) For that matter it's not even a constant stream, it only needs to send data about your current query/suggestions until a new auto-complete becomes dominate, then it sends a small package of new results to replace old results. Case-in-point: notice your network usage bar only has a few blips as you type.

Further, the typing box and results screen are being handled in parallel; At worst your "slow down" is on the instant results, so if you aren't concerned with the instant results, there should be no problem. If you're still having a slow down, it's probably not due to your Internet connection, it's probably due to a crappy computer (hell, most Cell Phones can keep up with this sort of work load.) This is BY NO MEANS high resource usage.

Shorty after, I got a huge termination fee, coupled with data charges in the megabytes (I literally never even used it with any 3G service.) and activation fees, even though it was clearly stated I wasn't supposed to be charged. It took upwards of four calls before the charges were removed from my account. Needless to say, I'm glad I did it, especially after seeing more bologna like this.
