  1. Re:Teaching to the test on Cal Schools May Nix SAT In Admissions Process · · Score: 1

Here in California, schools are compared upon the SAT9 tests. Remember those? The really dumb ones tht you and your smart friends get lots of 99s on? Well, my school scored the lowest, compared against other schools in the area (poor, diverse, etc.) so now they are teaching specific test taking skills, but that's not the part that bothers me.

The fact is that our school is objectively low, and will be looked down upon by colleges. In math, our school is easily the best in the area, but only the smart students participate in any of these competitions. Unfortunately, the hordes of idiots are bogging us down, and making it seem like the B I got in AP Calculus probably doesn't look too good (I'm a slacker too). Its just the lower levels that are a problem. Our school has recently made Algebra a two year program. How disappointing. And I'm being punished for it.

The other point I was going to make was about drive. I've rarely even had a teacher who was in good in math as I was. They just had many more years of schooling. This never stopped me from winning awards in math. If the drive is there, it wil be possible to do well, no matter the setting, trust me.

I bring up the fact that I go to an objectively bad school again. It may be said to be bad, but I know a few of my friends are disappointed in our school too, because they can compete with people from other, better schools. There were 3 National Merit Scholars at my school, and 2 happened to be my closest friends (I slept in that day!) and I'm sure they could be compared and excel past other students, but people will just say they're probably not smart, they're from the dumb school.

Well, this really does piss me off to no end, but it feels nice to vent :)

Hopefully this raises my GPA [I had to stop being sucha a slacker :( ] and colleges look favorably on it. If not I'm doomed.

A few friends of mine bought off a few of the cards from game stores really cheap, and we started playing, but we couldn't find anymore. Come to think of it, I probably could check eBay, but this is one example of a game that never made it despite how good it was. I guess it was a litle to difficult for the mainstream gamers, but I taked to my local comic book store owner, and he said it was the only game to ever get 4 stars in some magazine rating. I don't remember which one though. But if any of you happen to come across a few cards...feel free to email me.

This reminds me of a valid scientific point, that any good litle nerd should be familiar with.

In the late 1800's, there was DC, the virtual child of Thomas Edison. He founded the Edison Electric Light Company based upon it. He made ridiculous amuonts of money off of his idea, being the only provider, even though there was nearly no demand. (Especiially compared to California now, see my previous comment).

After Edison's company had been founded, there was another scientist continuing the search for power, though Edison had already found it. It was Nikolai Tesla, and he was developing AC (the current standard). He couldn't get funding for his project because Edison used much of his sway in the business to fight him,or what little he actully had to do since Tesla was a minor scientist, albeit with a great idea. Eventually his idea was discovered and his ideas overcame Edison's, but wouldn't it be a shame if fusion went the way of the dinosaur? It is possible, it happens on the Sun constantly, we just have yet to reproduce the effect.

I suggest reading about Tesla on your own, they're tend to be quite fascinating, especially "The Philadelphia Project", even if they do seem a bit outrageous.

My opinions are better than yours.

OK, I'm a little unclear on the system, but this is how it works (right?):

Which ever candidate gets the most popular vote, their party gets to pick the electors (the electoral college)). The don't just get the votes, there are people.

Okay, so the electors cast their vote for who they want, and since the party gets to pick them, they usually vote for their party, but since its off by as little as 2 electoral college votes, say a couple Republicans decided they have personal Grudges against Dubya, couldn't that change the election beyond prediction?

If I missed something please correct me. Its not exactly a clear system, sp don't moderate me either.

I have to say I am sorry to see Signal 11 leave, if only for the loss of a person's valid opinion.

I did take the time to read Signal's farewell speech, and it showed me somethings that I never really knew before. I happen to be a moderator all the time, I'm apparently the perfect user. I never got moderated up for my posts (thanks a lot) but since the first time I became a moderator, I've gained about 20 karma through metamoderation. This took me about 2 months, at most.

If +50 is the cap, where is the challenge? In a few more months, I'll probably be there, even though my comments, though excellent, never get moderated up. But, I digress.

I love to see a person who actually has the time to post often (Signal 11, _xeno_, Wakko Warner, so many more...). Even if their opinions conflict with mine, I enjoy gettting to see the other side of a topic. It is deeply disheartening to see that a valued member (I'm user 200000+, yeah, don't I feel special) is leaving.

I guess I really didn't get to see the early days of /.(period) Even so, I still manage to find the time every night to come to my favorite site, at least read the headlines, and if there's an article that I care about (and understand) I usually manage to read the comments. If I realize that many of the people I look up to (I'm on a senior in high school, I still admire all the techies I endevour to be) won't be posting, and there are about 40 posts at -1, with another 200 that probably should be, I might not want to continue coming here for the comments. Can moderation really be the problem?

I'm probably a little incoherant by now, but if you've gotten this far, you might as well keep reading.

Moderation is supposed to be the solution to the problem. We are supposed to be the best and the brightest, I don't have a clue as to why so many people think it is funny to continually post goat sex links. I bear the title of Nerd because I am proud of it. I like that. Being so, shouldn't we be able to figure out a solution to the overpopulation? Well, I'll get to thinking about it, and you all should too.

One more thing, Signal 11 said that emptionally charged statements are moderated up, which isn't right, because they aren't filled with technical statements, but aren't impassioned speeches that way because they have strong fact to back them up? I know that the intellectually superior of /. are supposed to ignore emotion completely, because nerds don't have any (thats why its ok to make fun of them right?) but is it really that bad if you feel strongly about something?

Well, thats about enough ranting for me today. I said I had no time, I now have negative time, which means skipping more homework for me, but at leats i got to voice myself, and though I can only hope for 4 people to read it, it still makes me feel good to know that someone might have.

I would appreciate it if there were more girl geeks. I personally try to encourage that sort of behavior but I ended up having to coach many of the girls in the class on basic material. May of the other intelligent girls I meet would prefer to become lawyers. I guess that correlates more with the "social behavior" that girls apparently tend to favor over technical jobs (Arguing in court, technically social). Also, I notice that many of the girls who get high grades in math, as I do, aren't even nearly intersested in the things I am. They have no drive to be astrophysicists or engineers.
