Because a lot of people own a lot of shares of MSFT. I'm willing to wager this guy lost a bunch value in his stock and now he wants to vent. OSS is just an easy target.

I wouldn't feel very good right now if I owned Microsoft Stock that I bought at $110.

Wow! I didn't realize I have been playing a game. I guess I am winning so far. Unfortunately I did see about 10 seconds of the movie on cable without realizing what it was before my friend slapped the remote out of my hand and beat me senseless. God bless him.

    1. What is the status on the upcoming movie? I see it listed on the IMDB, but haven't heard anything about it. Is that just a rumor, or is it happening?

    2. What makes you think you can possibly outdo the 1981 mini-series? Seriously who are you kidding? That was the greatest Book -> TV transition I have ever seen. What better way to portray your book than with a cheesy Dr. Who'ish / Red Dwarf'ish BBC series with a special effects budget of $1.50.

    That is all.

  4. Lets do some calculations on How Much Is A Web Site Worth? · · Score: 1

Ok, time to whip out the handy analog calulator.

You have spent $60K over the past five years which comes out to $12K per year operating expenses. You have been grossing $20K in ad revenue. That leaves $8K per year in profit (before taxes). For the sake of argument we will just pretend that taxes don't exist. So when they buy your site they have to all of a suden start paying people to run it (I'm assuming that is all being done for free by you and your buddies right now). Not a good investment at all, IMHO.

Now lets assume you will be pulling in $100K in gross ad revenue every year. That's $88K after costs. This is better, but you still aren't making enough to pay the people needed to run the site.

Do you seriously think a website that is going to have serious problems breaking even is worth $250K?

I used these two when doing research before buying my cellphone. They both also have breakdowns of service plans available. Good luck!

My personal opinion is that the Samsung SCH-3500 is the best bang for your buck (150 of them) available right now. That is if you can find one, I had to search for a month. I don't know if they have ramped up production yet to meet demand.

  6. Bands CAN make money touring. on The Dark Side Of Napster · · Score: 1

The sad fact is that most MTV'ized bands out there simply suck live. I've seen it all too often. Fortunately there are plenty of extremely good live bands, and most of them allow recording and free trading of tapes & CDs of live shows. Bands like Phish, moe., String Cheese Incident, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Widespread Panic, etc. make most of their money from touring. They can do this because they are good enough live to draw a crowd (and because they all have something that few bands have these days: artistic integrity). These bands are rarely on the radio and just about never on MTV, but they still manage to make ends meet by touring and having a tight knit group of fans.

I'm not trying to advocate piracy of music. In fact I am strongly against it. I just wanted to point out that the statement that bands can't make money touring is patently false. That is all.

What's Alpha-Male Syndrome? Never heard of it ;)

Seriously though, the guys who buy the mega-ultra expensive machines are usually hardcore gamers or trying to make up for their lack of technical know-how by buying expensive hardware. Kind of like a guy buying a Porsche to make up for his 'inadequacies'. I have seen this all too often. The real Alpha-Males(geeks) are the ones who can still do usefull things with 386's.

  11. If you want to see a good horror movie... on Review: "Scream 3" · · Score: 1

go see Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. At first glance this seems to be a horrible B-Class horror flick. Upon closer inspection it actually turns out to be an excellent parody of horror film conventions. There was a lot more thought put into this movie than most people realize. It starts out just like any other of the TCM movies, but ends up being copletely different than any other horror movie ever made. This movie achieved what the Scream movies failed miserably at portraying. If you have read any of Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus books or know about this stuff you will really get a kick out of the underlying theme present in the movie. I didn't find this movie the least bit scary (if you want a real nailbiter go rent In the Mouth of Madness), the sheer ridiculousness of the situations presented made me laugh a lot. Matthew McConaughey is excellent and Renée Zellweger shows her ample 'talents'. Serously, if want to see a great horror parody forget the Scream franchise and rent this movie.

People may hate to admit it, but Sun hardware is probably the most reliable hardware out there. That is what you are paying for. Their stuff is designed for very large companies who will pay a premium for reliable systems. The problem with PC hardware is that so many different people make different parts that compatibility issues can and do arise, and that is not acceptable for critical servers. Also as much as people gripe about the OS it is also the most scalable OS out there, way better than NT, Netware, Irix or even (*gasp*) Linux for massive systems.

  18. Re:Dual Proccessor on Pix of The Crusoe Chips · · Score: 2

It doesn't seem likely that a dual configuration is possible. The northbridge of a machine's chipset would be responsible for allowing MPS. The Crusoe has a northbridge built into it, so unless they specifically designed it to allow multiple processors this would be unlikely. This may be something they decide to add in to a future Crusoe processor.
