Lucky you. In my zip code, packages from Amazon.com are routinely disappeared. You'd think Amazon would notice and use UPS, but they keep sending regular mail.

There's nothing like going to the post office to report a missing shipment and hearing the guy in front of you reporting a missing shipment.

Does anyone else think that lack of good, basic tuturials are a major omission in modern OSes? Seems like they could bring a lot clueless users up to speed.

  5. Leadership Needed, Pronto on ISP Operator Barry Shein Answers Spam Questions · · Score: 1

Yeah, what a mess. It makes you wish that someone could work up an alternate, optional email network that worked on a postage basis-- similar to snail mail but with much lower costs and digital efficiency.

Each message would require a certain (trivial) amount of e-postage within the network, or cost more if it had to pass through a gateway to another controlled network.

Mail sent to addresses on the existing SMTP network wouldn't cost more to send, but would optionally carry a one-time "return postage" key.

Mail coming FROM the existing SMTP network with a valid key would be allowed through (and the postage deducted from your account or escrow), otherwise it would be blocked and the sender urged to use the postage-enabled network instead.

Seems like the best of both worlds-- power users would maintain mailboxen on the "free" internet for things like lists and public contact (and filter spam), while most others would opt for the spam-free but slightly more expensive postage network. USPS anyone? UN? WTO? (heh)

  8. Why I'm not implementing SSO on Passport vs. Plan 9 · · Score: 1

I'm building a CMS that spans multiple virtual sites on the same server, and I considered implementing a single-sign-on system where if you logged into one site on the server, you would be able to access any other site in the CMS (as long as you were a member of that site as well!) without having to log in again.

I nearly built it, because I'm constantly switching from site to site and it's a pain to log in so often. But then the following (purely fictional, I assure you) scenario occurred to me:

"Hey dude, when I go to whaleporn.org on your computer, it has you logged in as *ladyDolphin69*! What's up with that?!? I never knew you were into big mammals..."

SSO is akin to spooky action at a distance: log in to one place and you've logged into them all. No thanks.

I wish the RIAA would concentrate their efforts on seeking restitution for commercial piracy that has actually occurred instead of trying to do an end-run on our civil liberties in advance of any violation of the law.
