AFAIK, most of the Japanese anime companies are not members of the MPAA. The only exception I can think of right now is Disney (who is the U.S. publisher for many of Miyazaki's films, most of which are still unreleased in the U.S.).

I assume you're referring to Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou. The first Karekano DVD (op. 1) does NOT have English subtitles. I wish it did, it would make understanding it (for me as a non-native Japanese speaker) quite a lot easier. Karekano is an amazingly beautiful and amazingly dramatic and emotional show, BTW.

  6. Re:Just goes to show you... on Princess Mononoke DVD: No Japanese · · Score: 1
Consumer copies of Japanese movies sell for much higher prices in Japan than they do in the U.S.

Example: The retail price of the Japanese "Princess Mononoke" llaserdisc is JPY7800, or about $70. The DVD's are expected to carry the same price tag.

Movies on laserdisc in the U.S. used to sell for about $40. Movies on DVD have been selling for about $20-30.

In Japan, movies sell for about $70-100 on LD, and about $40-100 on DVD. (companies have only just started experimenting with lowering prices). Most people think that this is due to the mass home piracy that occurs in Japan. Hardly anyone will buy movies on tape or DVD or LD. Rather they will rent it from a store and make a VHHS copy.

Of course, in the U.S. the whole anime industry is based on the fact that you can't find 99% of the anime at a Blockbuster or Hollywood video So basically, if you want it, you have to buy it.

This strategy is going to kill itself however. . "Free Piracy" will continue to rise. (By "Free piracy", I mean fansubbing, borrowing from friends, downloading off of alt.binaries.multimedia.anime, etc). "Free Piracy does not support criminal organizations like the various Chinese mafia organizations, so it is morally "less wrong" than buying a pirated VCD.

I too will buy the Japanese import DVD. I will not buy the U.S. version if it lacks Japanese dialogue. Here's what you should do Disney: Don't even bother releasing the U.S. version. It will only annoy fans in the U.S. Release the Japanese version (at the $120 price), but include English subtitles . That way, American fans can buy the import and not have to fasnub it.
