Does anyone remember the Fractal Painter release that came in a paint can? I remember it being mentioned in a article about packaging on software. Sorry I don't have an URL it was a long time ago. Anyway the gist was that they were looking for a unique package so they went with the paint can thing. It turned out that the paint can was cheaper. Both in manufacturing and shipping. A 1 gallon paint can is a *standard* size so it was much cheaper all around. That and the cans themselves are recyclable.
ya just what I want, a high powered RF transceiver in my skull. Unfortunately I'd have to get all my metal fillings replaced with ceramic, too much interferance.
I know it's not a real language but if you are considering Visual Basic VBA is a great place to start. It's actually quite powerfull and kinda fun, in that you can build a Tetis game into a your default spreadsheet to make it look like your actually working.
Python is another popular one being mentioned. It'd be a good place to start as it's OO and from Python you can got to JPython and then Java then C++ in a fairly logical order.
Personally I know a lot of people taking the wait and see approach with W2K on 32bit Intel. You can be damn sure they're not gonna jump on 64 as soon as it comes out. Linux looks like it's going to have a good head start on the IA-64. In htat by the time people get comfortable with the hardware Linux will have the most 'Time In' and probably the most users.
bringing up the arrow was a poor idea. Not our greatest moment. Yet it wasn't stolen US tech, and it was scrapped because it made our war like neighmours to the south.
Foreign workers come here for opportunity, because Americans have created an economy which is growing faster than the rest of the Earth's economies combined.
Actually as someone in another thead pointed out people (engineers, programmers, commedians) flock to the US because your educational system is incapable of creating productive members of society. Or at the very least not without the help of wealthy relatives to send them to grad school.
Please explain how more than half of your high school students cannot draw an outline of the US on a map?
Canada is a third-world nation. If foreign aid from the US weren't propping up their quasi-socialist pseudo-economy, there would be widespread starvation.
Has anyone pointed out to you that the US's single largest trading partner is Canada. And that by volume it's almost twice that of the next nation.
They ban free speech, they ban the means of self-defense.
nay we just don't have the overwhelming desire to kill our fellow citizens.
The reason you've never revolted against your socialist masters is that you haven't the balls, the brains, or the means (weapons).
It's not a matter balls there was never any reason to.
And as for brains who keeps running out of visa's for foreign workers, huh?
and Weapons.... Ever heard of the Avro Arrow?
All you can do is sit around whining about how unfair it is that you can't compete with America.
Compete? dumb ass we run Ammerica from here. (and the air is much cleaner) Why to you think the exchange rate is where it is?
I remember reading a while ago about how to make abandonware open source. This may be the logical extention of that. If no one can squeeze any more money out of motif then lets give it away.
This may set an interesting precedence as well as companies can afford to support, expand, market, etc thier software they just open source it.
And no perhaps someone will make Motif a little more esthetically pleasing, as it's butt ugly.
our helpdesk is contrated out so we have no idea how many staff we have at any given time. The contract is based on an experience points (no kidding) system and our QOS agreement specifies 40 EXP. So that could be i guru and 11 usless knobs.
Uh... what happens when the rest of the world wakes up? I mean there are a lot of people that speak/read chinese and we all know how that works on a PC.
Does any one remember the bit about pictograms in the The Diamond Age? I think the language if the internet is going to be graphical in nature. At least from the user perspective, and all of us back end guys will end up speaking XML directly.
You can't tell me M$ didn't see this coming. They've probably got buisness and marking plans for every possible contingent. They gonna whine and then appeal then loose. And the day after that they are going to hit the ground running. They've probably already rented office space, have Word ported to Linux, and have thier distro of BSD. (yes BSD)

I still have some old games I wrote (Don't run into the pixel stuff) on my casette drive. I still haul it out one in a while.
And I still like the idea of an 'OS' on a cartridge.

I'm good for a couple of bucks.
Talk about your free speech battles.
