While your story has some merit you leave out the part where a huge amount of PC games came out during the NES, SNES, XBOX, ETC days when it was much more likely to have a problem than today. The Xbox had a 733Mhz Intel Processor, You can't buy a new computer that slow anymore and even onboard graphic's or a 49 dollar video card will play most games perfectly fine in a decent rez.
I still think it has more to due with control than with hardware problems. As far as software goes... yeah ok we got some trouble there but not as much as back in the day with da 640k base memory.
Anyway you work this, it all comes down to them not testing enough.
But.... isn't it their desire to keep their existing customers base? How can they do so this way?
And they already have a special clean tool you can download online so why not just include that in their installer to begin with? Its never seemed to screw up anything more than the normal installer does and at at minimum it could run after the install has failed since it's almost always apparent there is a problem on first boot when Norton screams about being broken...
It will tell you what programs you need to update. It will tell you every 1 to 3 days that you have a problem with Word, Excel, IE, Flash, Adobe Acrobat, etc, etc and really need to download the update from which ever companies website. It's made me decide to switch to Linux just out of shear annoyance... It's really funny how the update programs that litter my process list don't tell me this information for at least 1 to 4 weeks as I'd really like to know sooner... Can a brother get a damn RSS feed or something?
More than likely all of the above apply; Your mom is using IE, has an old version of Flash, Java, and Shockwave installed or has malware installed that is not detected yet. If you or your mom like the War3z then you more than likely have something not detected. A lot of stuff doesn't get added for a long long time when it doesn't break anything.

I saw hundreds of computers with McAfee and Norton antivirus pass through the computer store I once worked at. It's really sad when people tell you they installed something to protect their computer but it instantly nuked it.. McAfee always seemed worse as Norton just wouldn't run right until you uninstalled it and ran the cleanup tool and then manually made sure every possible file and registry item was really gone and then reinstalled... Ugh... If you make a product and then make a new version how can the new version freakout and break because you once had the older version made by the same company?
O and no refunds on opened software! o and it wasn't our software that broke your computer even though it was...... damn dirty lies....
I say we just keep burning old tires to heat our homes and be done with it...

They are already totally on board with the idea that they will have zero control and are willing to pay whatever you demand. People who play or did play computer games are much more likely to cause trouble and bitch.
Some people do hack and mod the systems but most people who run out and by a PS3, wee or XBOX360 will never do so. I have an xbox v1.1 I paid 20 bucks for broke, fixed it, installed a 300gb HD drive packed full of games and emulators and flashed the sucker. When people see it they beg me to mod their systems until I tell them they need to fork over the money for the mod chip and hard drive and then strangely they don't want to do it anymore. I say strangely because the total cost to mod is less than buying two games but I guess they don't see it that way.
As far as hardware compatibility problems.. I don't think that is much of an issue being that there are only two video chip makers and two processor chip makers left. Everyone runs WinXP for games and turning off antivirus isn't hard or even needed most of the time so I'm pretty sure it's all about the DRM and fanboys being fanboys.
Owning a computer is normal but talking about how fast it is is being a nerd. Owning a PS3 is cool and means your mommy and daddy must love you enough to hand over their credit card.
The list I drew up took about 15 seconds and was from a site that listed pending class-action lawsuits. It stated ban dates for all of the above but I didn't check to see if the site was in the US. According to some other random slashdotter some of this stuff is still on the market.
I really don't feel like spending several hours drawing up a perfect list for a group of people who really aren't going to care and definitely NOT going to pay me.
I would however hope that most people know that the FDA has shown itself to be less concerned about what its own scientist think vs what the suites at the pharam corps thing since it routinely ignores the scientist opinions. Do a few google searches or check wiki or something if you want a citation I'm tired of spoon feeding.
