  1. Jacks on Danger in the Big Blue Room · · Score: 1

Why do all these anti-corporate persons still feel a need to smoke? Of all the habits to pick up, you pick one that not only kills you, provides a very mediocre change of brain activity (alcohol is corporatized too, but that doesn't stop its effects), and is available thanks to advertising (corporate brain-washing) and the Tobacco companies, some of the eviliest organizations to have ever existed. What gives !? If you want to create change, don't be an asshole by proving what a rebel you are, do it with your actions and *STOP SMOKING*.

  2. Reason on What's Apple's Legal Basis For Blocking Cube Previews? · · Score: 1

Of *course* there is a reason for this foolish action that will only alienate hard-core fans. Steve Jobs (as probably a lot of people at Apple, peons seems to unconciously follow their leader) is a fucking ego-maniac. Sure, nobody gave a damn that this was known beforehand, they still cheered when the official announcement came. All that happened was Jobs lost some of the hoopla his mind feeds upon. What do expect from a company run by a man like him?

If he's just going by BugTraq why isn't OpenBSD the greatest OS out there? Or, if you want some sarcastic alternatives; what about BeOS, VMS, Minix, or GNU Hurd? Nevermind of course what he says later in the article (47 'sploits so far this year for Windows *AND* Linux) kind of contradicts his earlier statements that Linux is incredibly insecure. Also ignoring the multitudes of distributions, which increases the count...

Nothing is more exhilarating than to know that code your writting is going to real use (even if the project justs rejects it as not good enough - but you as the teacher should help them), not just text-book examples on loops and theory.

  7. Making money on RIAA Responds to Napster - Raises Serious Questions · · Score: 3

Could someone please explain to me Napster Inc.'s idea on how it makes money? All I remember was a memo from their offices a while back making one of their goals 'destruction of current CD distributors, e.g., Tower'. Is this company just so chock-full of idiocy that they jumped into a product with no viable method of making money? Or are they such megalomaniacs that they thought they would be the forefront of a music 'revolution' in which artists would require their services to be heard?
P.S. If you're on napster right now, go get the song 'Megalomaniac'. Pretty damn good.

  8. Amazed on Selfish Society · · Score: 1

I quite astounded really, JonKatz has actually written a very informative, thought-provoking piece of political apathy of geeks/hackers/whatever. I find the constant libertarian stance taken by editors of both this fine news site, as well as others involved heavily in technology (the editors at hackernews.com seem particularly fond of Ayn Rand) to be quite annoying. Many people call those of socialist/communists/leftist persuasion idealist, just take a look at what the libertarians want! A world dominated (even more so) by gigantic corporations because the 'open markets' would benefit humanity? Bullshit! Haven't you people ever read Animal Farm? Dissolution of government would only create a plutocracy run by those with deep economic pockets. When are people going to realize that the greatest tool for freedom is not the computer/internet/crypto but *democracy*. You geeks want to protect privacy, free speech and all of your other inalienable rights? Get off the keyboard and go take charge of your government and your life.

How do they make the decisions for these kind of tech events? I'd like to have something in my backyard (Northern VA, but Washington DC/Southern Md works too), but all we ever get are crappy expos on new tech for helping the government crunch numbers or spy on us. Northern VA is one of the geekiest places in the nation (second only to Silicon Valley), so when will we get the recognition we deserve?

  23. Re:Security and Privacy (somewhat OT) on Will BXXP Replace HTTP? · · Score: 1

I would care to disagree. The protocols in their current manner offer less security from censorship and tracking than other protocols. HTTP is done via plain-text communication channels, what's to stop a government entity from searching through that to find keywords (ever heard of ECHELON?), or a company like DoubleClick to carefully track your IP address across requests. Hell, check out this example of what HTTP tells the world about you. Servers give away information, ever heard of http://www.netcraft.com and how they get their statistics? The internet is hardly anonymous, any person with enough determination or resources could eventually trace back IP addresses or email to the sender. As recent articles on /. have shown (sorry, but not linked here), even creations like Gnutella, specifically designed to be free and anonymous, can be easily traced. While BXXP may not have security in mind as other replacements for outdated protocols have (like Secure Shell), it is unlikely a sinister govenment/coporate/communist conspiracy to make the internet less free.

  24. Newspapers on The Social Life Of Information · · Score: 1

Why are we so intent on replacing newspapers when they are the most effective medium for news? With one glance at the Washington Post while I'm buying coffee at 7-11 and see 6 headlines and comprehend them with a speed and accuracy I could never get with radio, TV, and 'push' content. Newspapers are a perfect example of top-down design: I can then descend into the first paragraph of each article, getting the gist, then down into the nitty-gritty details. This is also ignoring the reprehensible quality of television 'news'....
