    But it's government, so to get anything done, anything enforceable would have to pretty much say, "You can only keep records for 25 years, and then you have to delete them. Seriously, guys, okay?" I'm not saying don't bother. Good on ya, California. But don't get yours hopes up.

    You hit the nail on the head, there, man. The Democrats, and the clearly unthwartable propaganda machine they've built that has won them all their impressive power, have finally swayed Slashdot and CNN away from their traditionally pro-authoritarian views.

    Some people will claim that a rise in political stories has something to do with the upcoming elections. Those people have clearly been bribed.

    If you'rea nerd you tend to look at things (everything) logically, if you take that approach to having children, there really is no logical reason to do so in this day and age.

    If you can say that, then you can say there's no logical reason to have sex or play baseball or create wealth. Some people want kids, others don't. There's no logic there. There's logic in not having them if you can't afford them, but that's pretty much it, I think.

    A valid point. But on the other hand, how DO you build a mid-size engine with scrap type material? That'd be pretty awesome.

    Also, this isn't really applicable to terrorism. I read it and thought of that, too, and I was going to tell him to go with the classic-for-a-reason clothespin method, but apparently he just wants other people to know when he's dead. Not particularly useful for killing others.

    Well, yeah... If what they were teaching you to think was outside the box, then the fact that it was being taught by schools would make it inside the box. School is, by definition, the box. And I'm not sure how you propose that teachers tell kids to not do what they say. That seems about as easy as killing your own parents before you were born.

    It hasn't failed. It hasn't started yet. I know because I want it, am reasonably tech-savy, and don't have it. I will get it when it's straight-forward, predictable, doesn't involve modifying my house, and I can be pretty sure I'll be able to watch almost half the shows I watch in pretty-vision. That possible yet?

    You left off the only important one: was it written by someone with a history of good writing?

    Actors read lines. They can sometimes take a shitty script and make a movie "wonderfully acted" if they're fantastic actors. Directors make things slightly prettier than they would otherwise be, assuming it's a really good director. But the movie sucking (albeit prettily and with good acting) or not is entirely up to the writing. And apparently this one's written by the genius from Day After Tomorrow. It'll blow unprecedentedly.

    No. The physics seem fairly mundane. If they got taller because of it, then that would be some amazing physics.

    I suspect there will also be no stories featuring World Heart Day on Slashdot, despite heart disease being way more significant in every way than 9/11. I hate to be inconsiderate of tragedy victims, but are you not satisfied with it being mentioned on every other media outlet on every day of the year?

    By the way, I like your "9/11/2001", as though somebody wouldn't have known what you were talking about if you left off the year.

    Yes. The last thing the government should be in the business of is making black-and-white issues where one person profits by hurting another into laws. Clearly another case of people asking big government to overstep its bounds.

    The first step people will need to do is dump Windows completely.
