That's the best use of the Internet these days. As the Pacifica Network is overtaken by neo-Liberals, and most of its veteran journalists are ousted, the Internet and traditional print are the only sources of dissent, or at least critical review in the US today.
No one dares say that US foreign policy has created Osama Bin Laden. But giving the Taliban $42 million dollars in May of 2001 is a fact that the US Govt cannot refute.
Dear friends,
Corporations are not citizens of the US. They are chartered, temporary agreements so business can get done in an expiditious way. They have no right to the freedom of speech.
I've had many of the same feelings as you, dear poster. And I thought about going to England.
However, I soon learned that there is no constitutional protection of speech in England.
While "The Guardian" and other are allowed to do very serious investigative reporting on a lot of issues, they are watched keenly by the government and are not allowed to pubish much information very important to citizens interested in their freedom.
And heck, isn't the NSA listening post, "Echelon" there?
I think Einstein would have said "Here, here" to the scientist writing above.
And he definately said:
"If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?"
He was a scientist on German's programs for a LONG TIME. Only when he came to the US did he have to "go looking" for money. (Which of course he didn't have to do, because he was Einstein, but the point is that he had to move to private money because America can be so dumb)
Panix has been around forever. Great team of dedicated people. Running NetBSD, always offering me Kerberos tkts when I log in. SSH, the works. A variety of ISP (dialup, DSL) packages, as well as shell accounts.
I was wondering how people thought of fighting back? We've got Junkbusters, and I often send business reply mail back with a generous helping of rocks, asking them to remove me from their lists.
The Gap We ordered TWO months ago. Before delivery, we called The Gap and asked for a change of delivery address. We quadruple checked and the STILL sent it to some strange combination of the two addresses, and took no phone # for FedEx to call us. Address fixed, package left in lobby of our apt building, not with super - on Gap's instructions. DUH! Now they've sent a new, but incomplete version of the order. Incomplete because they failed to tell us that two items were special promo items that are of limited quantity. 'Team Leader' of Gap customer service "Belinda Johnson" screamed at me after I pointed out to them that they had the wrong address, ordered items to be left unattended, and that FedEx was able to find me for three other separate package deliveries this same week - so FedEx COUN'T have attempted delivery to me four times this past week. They refunded my money. I go the tracking number for the existing new package 50% complete and FedEx will have it to me Monday. We're Jewish.. we don't care about x-mas (no offence meant, of course) ATT Wireless Customer service is a nightmare. LONG waits, incompetant help. Sent me the wrong phone, sent me the phone anyway when I cancelled my order, spent four hours on the phone with them. Unable to give discounts. Don't really want to save high-volume users. So I'm at Bell Atlantic now, because I'll only use a unionized company. But they're not reported to be much better. Their phones aren't as nice at ATT's, but their NYC coverage is much better. Gary Null We're big health nuts. Gary's the most respectable name around. This guy mainlines Vitamin C.:-) Saved my dad's life a whole number of ways from the information on his radio show. All orders (lots of 'em) through his website and phone arrive early and with extras thrown in. FedEx Outstanding, knowledgeable and helpful although not particularly friendly customer service. Just the package, on time. THANK YOU! I often mark packages for two day delivery and get them the next day. Even on x-mas. 3Com Bought the Home Connect camera. Sweet little unit. Didn't work on my dad's machine. Customer Service only open from 9-6 M-F, duh. On a day off from work called them. They were rather cryptic in their response which I finally figured out, through searching the web, that my stupid MoBo doesn't support Universal Host Controllers, only Open Host Controllers for USB. If they had said, "Sorry buddy, you bought a cheap-ass MoBo that doesn't have the right timing." rather than what I now understand as synonymous "please see your hardware manufacturer" I'd be much happier.
Spend wisely X-mas observers.. donante to the Human Fund.
Netscapers work their butts off for 'normal' salaries, get good to vgood incentives and perks. But when semi-annual review comes along, OPTIONS are the real bonus. If your boss knows you're good, and that you've been an excellent part/leader of your team, then you should expect a very nice grant notice by quarter/semi/year end.
It beats the heck out of more pure cash, because you can leverage options - and then they vest.
Again, you don't explain much about your company's structure, but here's how it's worked where I work. I am a "sales nerd" so I get sales bonuses & a small amount of options.
MY HIGHSCHOOL GRADUATION DAY - VALEDICTORIAN MOI! These kinda days are fun too. Those non-nerds will have to wait quite some time for 8/9/10, but we'll be smiling inside knowing that all is right with the world on 8/9/01 -juddm
NETSCAPE A "GA" LINUX BUILD OF LDAP and MESSAGING. We're looking for production customers.
Most of our clients are easily running 15,000+ IMAP, heavy attachment users on Sun ES 3000s.
We bought the company who was doing the most advanced IMAP work (sorry, forgot their name.:-(
Check out our scalability. Sorry Exchange customers have come crawling back. (Disney, if I recall correctly)
Plus, the customizable webmail is not a CGI front end, but built into the MTA.
Finally, we have a hash indexed mail store that looks just like UN*X. You can hack it and then "rehash" to regain top performace.
And then there's the question if you're going to write any applications with the profile (UN/PW, jobtitle, etc) info from those users. LDAP is the best solution, ask anyone who has a clue. Netscape's LDAP can handle 50 million entries at 5000 queries/sec on one 4 cpu Xeon box. That's pretty hefty. Our Messenger comes with LDAP out of the box.
to work for you guys. You need sales folks? Biz Dev? You need admins and payroll, legal and HR? NO PROBLEM! That's the easy part. Finding talented folks like you fellas is the hard part. Good luck with Andover.net. I'm kinda bummed, but not leaving and not stopping the habit of click thru banners 'just because'. Andover are the lucky ones.
they're a big LDAP shop, thanks to Netscape. We got them doing distribution of their info and software via LDAP over a year ago. Linux is a dream match with LDAP. As server too. We've released a whole bunch of tools on Linux for LDAP. See www.mozilla.org
I feel like the only Netscaper out here in/. land. Maybe all my brethren are scared to post. Now for the defence.
While I am of the mind that almost all of our media is now catering to the interests of a few corporate giants (NBC - GE, ABC - DISNEY.. etc), I do not think that the trinity that I now work for will be bad for the Internet and it's protocols. It's not the same as the electromagnetic spectrum and the silliness of the US Govt and the telco/cable/telephone cartels. Netscape and Sun have been innovators who have open sourced and RFCed a very valuable segment of the common literature. I'm going to try to help it stay that way. More folks helping Mozilla would go a long way too.
As for the content of those Internet channels that we surf, well, we know AOL's "family" policy. We each have our own opinion on that. But it's for sure that you can use these technologies to put up your own websites, and say whatever you please. Please do.
Microsoft picked the fight. Just maybe someone else will win.
(Then of course, capitalism will fall into ruin and we'll all live free, liberated, able to lead our lives productively without having to sell our labor -- but that's certainly not my employer's opinion!)
this ain't the place for it.. but ask E*trade, Travelocity, Lucent, AT&T, BellSouth, Bell Atlantic, Sapient, when.com, GE, Ford, National Discount Brokers, etc., weather NAS sucks. NAS sucks only in that it's a bitch to run, but it's the most scalable, reliable solution available. The Eddie project is neato, but nothing like NAS.
For all of you who think that Sun might be 'upset' about AOL going Linux, think again. Sun entered into the relationship with Netscape for the SERVER, BIG BIZ, ECOMMERCE market. Netscape's got the best app server, the best directory server, an awesome mail server, EDI servers, and a host of other kick butt products. (Does it seem like I drank NSCP coolaide?)
Anyway, AOL using Linux for any kind of CLIENT machine doesn't hurt Sun, it hurts M$. It's a lot easier to NFS mount, or NIS+ or whatever to a Linux box than a WinCE.
Food for thought? Understand the market we're going after.
Of course, I can't reveal anything that I know, but let me make one thing perfectly clear. Netscape developers who are doing AOL projects run Linux. I'm no where near the HQ, and just a lowly field Systems Engineer, trying to make a buck. It's the developers who have helped us get Linux up and running on our corporate laptops.. and those developers are the ones that are working on AOL projects. Don't underestimate AOL.
I really liked "America On Linux", that I saw in this thread!
Over at Netscape they/we are moving our App Server to work in an EJB model with a more robust CORBA/COM interface (alpha ready now, June/July final beta releases). We've had a lot of buy in and development from MANY large companies wihtout this functionality. Funny that I don't see EJBs mentioned in this forum. Thoughts?
The Awards Show was lame at best. It was a Webster Hall.. and Robin Leach MCed the show. Nobody paid him any mind. Some guy from some local Silicon Alley music site (sorry, forgot your name) presented and accepted the award. I guess nobody in NY's Silicon Alley upper-crust reads Slashdot. Well, that's good for me! Anyway, I whooped and hollered when/. won, and almost ran up to accept the hunk o' plastic in Rob's name. But I was already a bit drunk on wine. There was then a paunchy ~40 year old male trapeze artist that made me a bit ill. A man in a blue bunny suit with his genitals protruding presented the awards. Very low nerd factor.
Anyone using a rocket stove? They burn SUPER hot and are very efficient. Banned too?
Gates' wife was on Colbert last week. Why? Damage control, it seems.
Colin Powell is a board memeber of AOL/TW. His son is the head of the FCC. His son approved the merger between AOL and TW.
AOL can do pretty much what it wants, and will do what the US Gov't wants.
I don't like it one bit.

Any validity to the closing story about Jobs and Woz inventing and selling the blue box?
