  1. Re:It worked great in Nazi Germany on Ellison Wants National ID Card, Powered By Oracle · · Score: 1

Well, it works in today's democratic Germany. I have a "Personalausweis", which is just a card with my name, my picture and my adress on it. It works great and it can quite securely identify me and tell my age whenever I go to places where this is needed.

ID cards aren't bad. Please think before flaming.

He could just walk into the next Russian embassy. It's basically Russian territory, they can't arrest him there and the embassy people would be able to fly him out to Russia without a passport and could even give him a new passport. So there, definitely, unfortunately, is a flight risk.

  3. What about CowboyNeal on Sweat-Eating Bacteria to Live in Your Clothes · · Score: 1

Whatever happened to CowboyNeal? Just at LinuxTag, CmdrTaco said that CowboyNeal is the right answer to all questions and of course it is: My clothes do smell like CowboyNeal.

You really left out an important option here. Shame on you.

    "destroy the kIllustrator-package"

This is actually a wrong transloation. It should be "destroy all kIllustrator-packaging". Packaging as in the little paper boxes that commercial programs come in.

And yes, they definitely do operate as if this was a commercial program.

  5. Re:And you Americans still complain on Lone Gunmen Get the Axe From Fox · · Score: 1

Very funny. How do you get a fast internet connection in germany? You don't! And if you do you'll have to spend A LOT of money.

How do you play Region Code 1 DVDs in Europe? You don't! (Well, actually, you do but it's usually quite a hassle.)

And how do you pay for such a DVD collection? I don't have like 150$ lying around just to watch "X-Files".

  6. And you Americans still complain on Lone Gunmen Get the Axe From Fox · · Score: 1

I HATE this. How could Americans still complain about which series they can watch on TV? In Germany it takes the major TV networks YEARS to start on a translation and it's practitcally a sure thing that these dubbed versions SUCK. I wisch I could watch any of theses series in their original language - it's simply not possible. I also wish that I wouldn't have to wait over a year to watch them here in Germany. That's really not cool.

Well, anyway. Have fun watching your TV series. But please DON'T COMPLAIN about some of them being axed because I'M ALREADY JEALOUS ENOUGH.

  7. German "Green Card" initiative on Finding American Companies for Overseas Work? · · Score: 1

In Germany there is a so-called "Green-Card Initiative" that allows IT-workers from other coutries to work in Germany. It's not really a green-card, though, since it's limited to 5 years and has limited quotas (it's comparable to US H1-B visas). These quoates are not even closely reached yet, though, so that this might be a good way to get a foot into the door (at least). If you have problems with German (the language) - there are enough companies where you can talk English at work and in bigger cities you can even shop in English.I don't have an internet address for you but maybe just search for it - I think the German government has an English page up, too.

  8. Translation on SAP DB Database To Be GPLed? · · Score: 1

This is a pretty accurate translation, I would say. It really doesn't say anything more in the article.

According to information of c't, [that's one of the magazines that heise publishes; note of the translator] SAP plans to put their SAP DB under the GPL, respectively the LGPL, at tommorow's LinuxWorld in Frankfurt. This SQL-Database is currently used mainly by the flagship of the Walldorf company, SAP R3. R3 also has interfaces to other databases like Informix, Oracle or DB2. SAP DB is the first bigger SAP project whose sourcecode is freely available.
  9. This is very dangerous for your privacy! on Advertising Via GPS · · Score: 1

Just imagine evil advertisers always knowing where you are and then delivering the "perfect" ad to you. That doesn't sound that great to me. They could also easily use this information to have a good profile of what you do everyday, where you shop, etc.

Besides, even without advertising on my PDA/cellphone the screen is still small enough, so please spare me that.

  10. Why do people still open attachments? on The Next Generation of ILOVEYOU:The Porn Worm · · Score: 1

I really don't understand this. Of course you could ask why they use Outlook in the first place but that is largely because companies dictate that or because people are simply to lazy to convert all of their message archives.

But I really wonder why, after all this media attention, even in the conventional media, people still open attachments that they didn't plan. I honestly don't understand it.

BTW: I still have to receive a single message from these worms.

  11. Posting things just in the sections on European Union Lifts Restrictions on Encryption Exports · · Score: 1

I really don't get it. I submit this story, it gets accepted (which is nice) and then it lands just in the sections. This is all fine with me, but then, one day /later/ it gets posted on the front page, essentially saying the same, linking to the same article. Not that I /really/ care but I just think it's stupid.

  12. This should happen every day. on JPL releases 20000 Mars Images · · Score: 3

Every time I see these great announcements that the NASA again released pictures I think that this should be a normal thing. Wouldn't you say that the NASA's work is supposed to be for all the humans, or, at least, for all U.S. citizens (since they finance it)? If there is a big mass of interested people looking at this then they migth even find something new and exciting (life on mars?) that would have slipped through otherwise. Open Source for Space Exploration!

  13. There is no decision made yet on German Censorware Targets Music · · Score: 1

This one isn't too bad. There is still no decision made yet and in Europe people are still a little bit more aware of people's need then in America where one big company can easily outwheigh a lot of citizens. So be aware and lobby against it wherever you are (provided you are german), but remember that this is just in testing, nothing more.
But still, if it would be implemented then it would be fatal, because they are already lobbying with the possibilities it gives you to block rassistic, etc., content.

  14. Not the first legally binding internet vote on 35,765 Internet Votes Cast by Arizona Democrats · · Score: 1

This was not the first legally binding internet vote in the world. The student council of a german university (I don't remember which one) could be elected via Internet approx. a month ago. In germany this is an official election (really!). I'm not sure if this was the first one though.

  15. I see his point, but ... on Bezos Responds to Tim O'Reilly's Open Letter · · Score: 1

I definitely see Jeff's point. If they wouldn't have tried to get those patents then someone else (mabye B&N) would have done. And then amazon might face a law-suit now.

But still, it would be a lot more gentleman-like to allow everybody to use this patent and just use it as a protection against law-suits of competitors. I also see that this isn't really the point because they want to kick B&N out of the market (they want to make profits, sure), but is this really achieved just by suing them? I don't think so. I would rather just keep the patent and don't do anything about it, just as a self-protection.

  16. Re:Stupid. on X-Files FPS Episode · · Score: 1

I would say the more important thing is that X-Files isn't supposed to be like "the matrix". It's a totally different thing and that's why this episode was crap: It was just not X-Files like. And another thing: X-Files has its setting in the present. All these things described there (especially perfect virtual reality) are not yet available. Obviously not what X-Files was in the first place.
