I use a laptop in school and agree it is a very efficient (and neat) way to take notes. However, I often look over the shoulder of some other laptop-using students and see them either drawing in MS Paint or browsing the internet. In the hands of someone who doesn't want to learn, it does nothing.
It may be an anecdotal statement but some of the Asian kids here in Toronto schools seem to prove it. They study hard, are quiet, score 95-100% on everything, but if you try to teach them something completely new they don't learn it much faster than normal people.
We, the moderators, need to sign a giant collective pact to make the wishes of the mod point martyrs come true. It's deeply disturbing how often the tactic works and propels you to a +5 insightful.
Because you're a dev and are already indoctrinated with the current way of doing things. First time users are not, and expect "about" to tell you about the program (and as I already stated, they don't care about version number, the name (which they already know) and copyright).
I think your defeatist attitude is what causes these people to think their behavior is acceptable. If we can send a strong message to them that fraud will not be tolerated then they will go away overnight.

1) User sends random string to bank
2) Bank encrypts with private key (impostors won't have this)
3) User decrypts encrypted message with the bank's public key and checks against the original random string. If they are the same, the authentication is successful.
Now, someone needs to create a Twitter implementation.
And although Windows users keep parroting supposed advantages in software compatibility they simply fail to see what customers really need - actual security, ability to function without being an admin, and a built-in package repository and management system (Windows geeks simply can't grasp the fact that your average Joe does NOT enjoy chasing dependencies and would prefer the system to do things for him), 2009 will not be the year of Windows on the desktop.
That's why you do it in steps, a few nukes at a time. It's like those scenes in movies where 2 people are pointing guns at each other and they slowly lower them at the same time.
The fairness issue is that from Iran's point of view, the US doesn't have the right to have nuclear weapons either. It's a pragmatic concept - we'll give up our nukes if you do.
Some people do need cars, and I accept that. But my point is that it's perfectly possible to maintain a car-free lifestyle and still have a life that you enjoy.
And just for full disclosure, I take a 50-minute public transit commute twice a day. It's longer than the comparable 22-minute drive, but most of those 50 minutes is spent on the subway productively working on my laptop, so it's just as good.

Because colonization is NOT planting a seed and forgetting. It's more like the way we colonized America, except ships will take a few time longer to travel around the Solar System and messages will travel in an hour. Why not colonize space? There are lots of fresh, unmined raw materials out there. We can solve the overpopulation crisis. We can solve the global warming crisis. Also, if you think we should stand around and be defeatist because we're insignificant, you're 6 billion times more insignificant. Why do you even try to work and make a living? Wouldn't you be OK with just killing yourself?
Much of the reason cars cost more in the EU is because of taxes (like the 180% car tax in Denmark, where you see A LOT of bicycles). Also, look at the public transit over in Europe. You can actually use it as your sole (except for the bike, of course) means of transportation.
As for the numbers, if there are 0.77 cars per person (we'll even assume no one has more than 1 car for himself; if you take that into account, the numbers fall more into my favor), you can match up each car to a person and 23% of the population will be without a personal car - they'll be sharing one with their spouse, which implies most of the time that one of the two doesn't need the car to get to work, or they'll have no car at all. In Europe, there is slightly less than 0.5 cars per capita. Assuming no one has multiple cars for himself, that means that a considerable number of people HAVE NO CAR WHATSOEVER.

The solution is clearly to make sure every new American citizen gets born in January.

Same reason why it's ok to surf Slashdot at work.

I think wife + kids addon and games are incompatible. You could try installing a different distribution of gf but I haven't had any successes yet.
It's Defective By Design because of all the DRM on it.
I think the GP is referring to the public image of police officers, not how they actually are. As in "it was originally a title of respect".
It's not just hookers, all sex must be paid for. Remember, you shouldn't illegally copy God's intellectual property!
Integer underflow most likely.
The recipe has been out there for ages. The implementation is what's tricky.
It's not like a certificate - it doesn't rely on VeriSign or anything like that - it's a plain old digital signature.

That kind of table works both ways. Prepare for a nice friendly visit from the NSA.

There's a big difference between 23% of the population living without a personal car and 50%.
