Several other people also did this, and eventually, a large group of students (grade 5-8 i think) were called down to the computer room, and basically the principal said "Ok, here's a piece of paper. If you know anyone involved in this, write down their names." Strangely, no one had any names written down on there. That was the only good thing about that school, is that no one would ever rat on anyone else.

If I were to write a useful program, and RedHat were to "steal" it and put it into their distribution, I would be very happy. My software that I made is being used by other people around the world, because it is useful! Second, with GPL code, YOUR USERS ARE LOSING! You are mostly correct in saying that the author isn't losing anything. However, the whole purpose of GPL isn't to give the author complete power of the code. The GPL is used TO promote freedom of code, and you are taking that freedom away from them, on code that they have the right to use. Well, I wouldn't say that there is a single application for mail exchange? File transfer? HTML? DNS maybe, although that HAS to change soon or the entire Internet is going to crumble to pieces ;-). Anyways, back to what I was saying.

Sendmail, Microsoft Exchange server, Qmail, Smail, they all seem to work together just fine. The necessity here is not a common program, but a common File Format. The thing that ties all these MTAs together is the fact that they all speak the same language, SMTP. Same goes for File Transfer, we have WU-FTPD, ProFTPD, Serv-U, Microsoft FTP Service, and they all work too. Once again, going back to the standard protocol thing.

If the developers of *Office Programs (KOffice, StarOffice, etc...) would just get together and hammer out something like the Shared Document Format (hmmm SDF even has a ring to it), then we would all benefit. For the time being, we would also need to support all the various other formats, like MS Office, but in the future, much of that silliness will be eliminated. Even better, if it gained enough popularity, Microsoft Office should support it eventually...

What we need here is not a standard office suite, but a standard file format!

If MacOSX does prove to be superior to Linux (not really a thought on my mind), and everyone migrates to it, then it doesn't show that MacOSX was a threat to Linux, it shows that MacOSX was technically superior to Linux.
