and would police need such powerful weaponry if they weren't in fear of their own lives? When rioters blah blah blah blah
Hey man, don't get me wrong - I've got no problem with giving the cops what they need to handle riots, etc. I was merely replying to the guy who stated that "We're talking about a military application here, not a police application". Sean
Never read "Press Enter", but one of Varley's novels from the Gaean trilogy (Demon, IIRC) made mention of something called a "sunburn gun" that was used to disperse an unruly crowd that was fighting over passage to Gaea. This new weapon sounds like the very thing Varley envisioned!
BTW, if you haven't read the Gaean trilogy (Titan, Wizard, and Demon), check them out - great stuff! Sean
This sort of findings make me more and more suprised of people who still don't think there are foreign life forms in the Universe.
Hehe.. there's some well-documented research that shows that foreign life forms exist right here on Earth! Of course, 'foreign' sorta depends on what country you originate from...
Try gnome-apt. Yeah it's a little rough around the edges (OK a lot rough) but if you really need a graphical apt/dpkg tool it'll get the job done.
As former Storm Linux user, I had become accustomed to their graphical package manager - it's considerably more polished than gnome-apt. When I switched to Debian, I got comfy with apt at the command line, but I missed the ability to search/browse packages. I fooled around with gnome-apt for a while - like you said, it gets the job done I guess... but neither of these tools is as slick as Red Carpet. If you use gnome-apt for browsing packages, give RC a shot - you might be pleasantly surprised. Sean
....waiting while that tape drive chugged away - that was half the fun of it.Nowadays, everything's instantaneous, and people don't realize the fun of waiting.....We should take the time out to enjoy life every now and then.
...Which is exactly what you SHOULD be doing instead of watching your tape drive chug away. While I agree with you in that the "ever faster pace of life" can be kinda hard on the ol' personal well-being, I don't think that (topic)faster computers(/topic) are a part of the problem. I certainly have better, more fulfilling things to do than sit around while my kernel compiles. The quicker my system boots and connects to the net, the quicker I can check the local events, weather, whatever, and get the hell out into the sunlight.
"Linux 2.4 does lack serious system management tools, but there's a slew of new products coming down the ramp very soon that will bring Linux into even more enterprises," said Tony DePointa, a Linux application developer.
Duh. Yep, no system management tools in 2.4... maybe that's because "Linux 2.4" is the kernel, not the OS.

To sqeeze 60 channels into a DSL line is quite a feat (since you can STILL use DSL at the same time)
A Google search for 'mPhase Traverser' gives a lot of sources for info on this technology, but I don't see anything that says that it's actually streaming 60 channels simultaneously over DSL. You're only watching one channel at a time, maybe it's only receiving one at a time? Sean
I got the 3-pack of X10 wireless cams a couple of months back. The cameras are satisfactory (see other posts in this story for specifcs), but it took 3 visits to their website and about a dozen emails to a real person to get them to stop spamming me. Caveat emptor... Sean
I can see the next wave of windoze ad-blocking proxies now... free popup/interstitial/superstitial ad blocking software, suppported by banner ads... ugh. Sean
Remember the old spider man TV show - where at least half of the show was generic 'spidey flying between buildings' shots that were constantly recycled, or scenes where none of the characters moved except for their mouths?
Reminds me of a short I saw on (IIRC) Saturday Night Live... it was some kind of superhero story, and the current crisis was a citywide animator's strike. EVERY scene was either completely still, or the back of someone's head.. you get the idea.. no? It was way funnier than I'm making it out to be.... Sean
According to this article, the first email message was sent in 1971 by an engineer named Ray Tomlinson. Prior to this, you could only send messages to users on a single machine
"Email" = "Electronic mail"
How does electronic mail exchanged between users of a single machine disqualify it from being email? It's still electronic mail!

...now Apple will be able to simply print out gay-ass color-coordinated Bondi Blue motherboards to stick in their iMacs. Wonderful.

Hehe - I forgot that whole "interspecies-sex-with-trisexual-centaurs" aspect of the Gaean books ;-)
Sean
... by the time this weapon makes into the hands of the police, you'll be able to counter it with your Robocop SPF 2000 sunblock!

"Clearly we've seen military combat weaponry migrate to the civil sector. Just walk past any Swat Team and you see what is basically an army unit"
Remember that the next time you're an innocent bystander at a future semi-annual Seattle riot.
