  1. VLA? on Explaining SETI · · Score: 2
Noticed the article had a pic of the VLA up at the top. It looks cool and all, but it's not used for SETI projects, is it? I was there a couple of weeks ago, did the full tour, and there was nothing about SETI, just traditional radio astronomy... so what gives?

It's very cool place to visit, BTW. I would say something like "visit it if you're in the area", but it's the ONLY thing the area - if you're actually in the area, chances are you're already going there. :-)

My god, even the SDSC advisory makes it a point to mention that Tsutomu Shimomura is the guy that nailed Kevin Mitnick. I mean, ok dude you're l33t, but enough already!! I actually tried reading Takedown, but I gave up after two chapters of Shimomura's ego-stroking.

At least the CERT Advisory managed to avoid the Mitnick angle....

I've been waiting eagerly for this DVD - it's the perfect test bed for my new lossless DVD compression algorithm. Dubbed the "William Hurt Compression Algorithm", this RLE scheme saves space by finding all of William Hurt's scenes and using a single frame of William Hurt to span the duration of the scene.

I guarantee that the viewer will not notice the difference! (At least, not in this movie...)

Should they be given the same 'protections' and standing as mail-order purchases?

Of course they should. A purchase made on the internet is fundamentally no different than a purchase made via mail order or over the phone.

Since you did the quote thing on 'protections', maybe you're wondering if those 'protections' are fair/legal/constitutional/whatever... ?

I've got a Philips Nino 320, and I'll agree that the input panel interface is a great feature. There is a downside though - not all apps support it fully. For example, if you want to fill out a form on an AvantGo page, and the field you're filling out is at the bottom of the page, the Jot input panel pops up and covers up the field you are trying to fill in! A proper app (or as 'proper' as you can get on WinCe) moves the active text entry area so that it is not obscured by the input panel.

All shopping carts that I have ever seen specifically allow the user to update data. They almost universally allow you to change the quantities and to add and remove items to a cart. This involves an update to the database blah blah blah...

Yep, that's generally how it works, but there's no need to send the PRICE of the things in the shopping cart as user-submitted data. Instead, you send things like product ID and quantity, and the software looks up the price from the database, which (on any sane system) is out-of-reach from Joe User.

If an online merchant is going to do something as stupid as this, they might as well save the shopping cart development costs and just put up a page with a blank check for the user to fill out, print, and cash.
