Have you considered BeOS? This is an OS that was written with multimedia production in mind, and comes bundled with some tools already, like a 3D audio mixer. There are lots of free Midi tools available for BeOS too, although I haven't checked to see if the specific ones you want are available.
Also, many top-notch commercial audio production/mastering applications are being ported to BeOS. Some already have been!
I still like to come here and read the top rated 15 or so posts (varies from level 2-5). I don't care if I miss the gems, I just can't stand the trolls. It's not like I have all the time in the world to read every intelligent comment anyways.
I like the rating system. Trolls suck, but they're dealt with pretty effectively given the circumstances.
I ran this one through Babelfish to convert it to English. Here's what I got:
"Hey slashdotters, why don't you get so riled up about Gnome vs KDE anymore? C'mon! That was fun! Ok, how about this: KDE sux, Gnome rulez! Heh heh, I see your blood pressure going up! Let's get those flames going! Nothing like an old fashioned desktop war to liven things up around here."
User id 775. That's him all right - I stand corrected.
And I see what you mean about "Karma whore on a higher plane" though I must disagree. JWZ is cool in my book. Eccentric and highly opinionated, but cool nontheless.
So I make promises I can't possibly keep. Do me a favor and read this thread back to the beginning, and then tell ME who is the troll, and who just got really pissed off by all the FUCKING TROLLS.
This guy, being as high profile as he is, is definately not an attention hoarder. He stays out of the limelite, and does not treat us to the kind of self promotion of, say, ESR.
Signal 11? Are you on crack? JWZ does not post on slashdot to my knowledge. He's too cool for that, and I don't mean that in a sarcastic way.
It's not 10:59 everywhere in the world, idiot, and I have no way of knowing where he lives. And you have no way of knowing where I live.
If you're going to be that pedantic, at least make sure you aren't leaving gaping holes in your logic. I think the meaning I was attempting to convey was clear enough.
Yeah, it's real cool to be a troll. Except one thing - it looks like you've been pretty busy posting here. Go outside - I promise the sun is still there.
Actually, I can too. I can hear from my house's ground floor whether the TV in the basement is on or not, and my older computer's monitor sometimes breaks out into a lower frequency so that I can hear it. It drives me nuts, and I have to hit it a few times to make the sound go away.
I can hear practically all TVs in this way, but not better computer monitors at high refresh rates. They're too high. Dogs can though - it's interesting to watch.
Note to everyone: People, please don't make references to the "comment above" or derivatives thereof. There are many different modes for showing comments, such as Threaded, Nested, Flat, etc.
They can be sorted Newest First, Oldest First, or Highest Scores first. There are different levels you can set before it spills into index mode. You can change the threshold from -1 to 5. You can have different thresholds for replies. And it goes on and on. Besides, posts accumulate quickly - even with the same settings, it may not be "the one above" if you wait too long before hitting "submit".
So please, if you're going to refer to a post, and it's not one you're replying to, it helps to give the post's ID. That makes things much easier to follow.
Dogs hear those whistle thingies that people can't even hear - and from long distances. My dog can hear my monitor sometimes - I kid you not. It freaks him out.
Cats just sleep. I doubt they even RECOGNIZE their names if they hear them. Any "lost cat" poster proclaiming "Answers to _____" is a damned dirty liar if you ask me...
I think the Crusoe processor would be the thing to run PDAs on at this stage in the game. After all, these things are MADE for PDAs and they're MADE for Linux! Well, ok, they're not MADE for linux, but they're made by a company that employs the guy behind linux. Same thing.
I hope the people doing the linux port keep their nose clean regarding GPL violations. Not that it needed to be said, but you just never know...
I'll probably get moderated down for this but... even a PHB won't fall for that. If he sees Linux working just fine (except maybe Netscape) and then sees M$ office running poorly, he will go looking for other office suites. At least, one would hope...
OTOH, most PHBs are pretty stupid. Then again, most PHBs buy Microsoft, so it just goes to show ya eh?:-)

Funny that a GUINNESS toast would occur at about 4:30-6:30 in the morning in Europe...

However, babelfish may be wrong, I don't know.

Attention grabbing antics?

The only pic of him I've ever seen is that one at www.jwz.org (not the clearest, highest resolution thing in existance).
Are there any better ones?
