    And, though it is almost always overlooked, let's not forget the Robertson screwdriver (I hate those damned slot screws and Philips is nearly as bad)

    For you americans you might be able to find a Robertson driver at Sears (I saw one there once in the states) and ask your canadian buddies to send you some descent screws (they'll know what you mean).

    But I don't have any spare cases, monitors, hard drives, or CD-ROM drives. I seriously doubt it would be worth the money to build systems around these, so they just sit and collect dust...

    An at case is an at case.. surely there is someone you know who is throwing away an even lesser machine whose case you could salvage.

    You don't even need shell access, just POP and SMTP. OR... if you have a lot of patience one of those damned webmail accounts that everyone is giving away.

    I guess I should buy stock in %country name% based webmail sites. :)

    I agree!
    I like that I can get a telnet session to my NT system, but it is pretty much useless without the GUI. My Linux setup, on the other hand, allows me to do things visually from a remote location. (Then again Linux doesn't require me do have a GUI for most of the things I want to do with it anyway.)

    I like the idea of being able to log into my machine to run my personal software from a machine at work.
    (Ever had a boss tell you "you can't load that damned program here, it takes up too much space", or "we had that once and it messed up the system..." and so on?)

    Socks5 is available for many flavors of unix (some versions are even free) from NEC.
    The only drawback to socks5 proxies that I can find is that it doesn't do ICMP packets (ie PING)
    You can get a free socks5 client for win95 that basically replaces winsock so you don't have to configure all your software for proxy. I don't think there is such a client product for Linux but I could be wrong. (that just means you have to set proxy settings in netscape, ICQ etc.

    That is exactly waht I was thinking...
    If you want to start collecting documents that were vital in making the net what it is today then the first thing to do is grab all the RFCs. Once you have those then there is little else you need.

    I don't think game consoles will totally replace computers (even for gaming) until HDTV is commonplace. Current TVs just don't have the resolution that most people want.
    Have you ever tried to surf the web with Web TV?
    Have you compared Star Wars Ep1 Racer for N64 to the PC version? (I picked that one because it is new and both versions were written at the same time) Console graphics are still too blocky and low res for me, and anything smaller than the type size my satelite reciever uses for the TV Guide is too hard to read. (and I wouldn't want to read it for very long, it's a strain on the eyes)

    I remember seeing a site a few months ago where someone was using an older quickcam (the B&W model) with the infared filter taken out of it. That camera coupled with an ordinary remote control for lighting gives surprising results. The remote actually throws an IR beam similar to a flashlight when viewed through the camera.

    When did lin-ix become the standard pronunciation for Linux? Did I miss a meeting. I thought it was just a typical american media slip up when the news people started saying it on TV, but now /. too?

    What happened to Linus' pronunciation rules:
    Lye-nuks in English, otherwise Lee-nukes (so it sounds like his name)

    I agree. The article says that this machine will crack 64 bit encryption in under 4 minutes, it does not say that this is the first NSA machine to do it nor does it say that it and their other cracking machines can't do 128 bit (or other bit levels) too.

    I'm sure that anybody who performs a small service for somebody else (like the kid down the street who mows your lawn) would much rather not pay taxes on the 5 bucks you give him for doing your front yard.

    Forget taxes, I don't know about where you are, but here in Canada the kid would have to make a fair bit of cash (over $6,000) before he'd have to pay taxes anyway. The real problem would be investing in an iris scanner (I'm sure they don't come cheap) just for the sake of making $5 a week mowing your lawn.

    Wired and Wasted is right.. caffine and alcohol make a nice combination.
    I once consumed a bottle of cheap wine and a few litres of coffee in the same night. I stopped drinking (both) around 1:00am but was still drunk and quite awake at around 7:00am.

    Does anyone know if it will air on any of the Canadian cable networks in the near future?

    (We don't get TNT, only TBS)

    Maybe TNT will make it into the next set of channels on the DSS/cable lineups. I hate having to wait for TNT shows (like Babylon 5's final season and movies... the extra wait and change of scheduling times caused me to miss the last 3 months completely)

    No, it is not illegal to import DVDs from other regions, inconvenient because of region coding, but not illegal.

    Of course, we have to get round the region coding on our players too. But there are several companies that will do the modifications, and selling modified players isn't illegal either.

    You are right, modding the player is not illegal either, warranty voiding, but not illegal. Then again if you bought it modded the seller probebly has his own warranty on it. Even turning off the macrovision copy protection is not illegal. Copying a movie for your own use is not illegal, but copying it for someone else who has not purchased it (and therefore not paid royalties) IS illegal. (please note I am not a lawyer and not fluent in the copyright laws of every country, but as far as I know this is true everywhere)

    Would you pay $5 for a DVD you could view twice?
    1. (assuming no phone line monitoring, selfcontained system, no credit card involved, and for this pole forget about "unlocking it" convinience here is the issue, no late fees, buy it in june watch it in august if you want, PLUS you get a great coaster afterwords)


    Why pay $5 when the video store down the street only charges $2-$3? Even if you are late once in a while you are still saving a ton of money.
    Then there are the online rental places that let you keep it for a week for the same price as the video store as long as you are willing to wait for it to be mailed to you.
    And there is a lot less waste involved in renting than in the divx model.

    I suggest you read it one more time.

    Here they are referring to the Twin Magic sockets to slot interface as a motherboard.

    "Users can simply plug into one Slot 1 or the motherboard's single socket to realize substantial gains in the power and performance of their desktop systems."

    This sounds to me like they are saying you can plug it into one slot on a muti slot MB or into the single slot on a standard MB... to increase performance on an existing system.

    you make it sound like AMD is a new thing... I have an AMD 386DX40 (about equal to Intel's 486sx25) sitting on the shelf. I bought it 10 years ago.

    It was a good, cheap alternative then, and had less (read no) compatability problems than the newer AMDs

    I mean, as we all know, Episode 3 will end on a down-note (Vader's "birth").. Even Empire's sad ending was false because we knew Jedi was coming along.. But this will be a REAL sad ending!

    Not really, I mean we already know that in three episodes his son manages to turn him back.

    I think that it will be hard to displace empire as the best Star Wars movie. Between Yoda, ghost ben, the romance between Leia and Han, Luke losing his hand and learning that Darth is his father, and Han's capture it's gonna be tough to beat.
    I'm sure I'll like the first 3 episodes, but I have a feeling that I'll always be thinking of whatever is going on on screen as the background to eps 4, 5 and 6.

    +++In case you didn't know, the Creative DVD kits that run about $200 include line doubling software and composite and S-video outs. Oh AC-3 audio too. +++ But that only works for the DVD because it doesn't have S-video or Composite INPUT! The HDTV card can line double your VCRs' output, your cable TV, your satelite dish, your external DVD, LD...

    I've been saying for years that HDTV compatable tvcards would be the "killer app" that brings on the real merging of TV and computer. ...and for exactly this reason. HDTV costs a lot because the screens need to be high res. Computers already have screens that match HDTV resolutions, the problem is even the big computer screens are small for TV, but for those who want HDTV just to be the first on the block a 25" computer monitor and a TV card are the cheapest way to go, especially if you consider the fact that the monitor will get use as a computer monitor as well as a TV. Further, I think that when "real" HDTVs get to be cheap people will start to use them as computer monitors. I mean who wouldn't want a 40"monitor to play quake on? (that doesn't do "free anti-aliasing" :)

    That's something I have been wishing for for a while. a colour palmpc that doesn't use WinCE.
    I wish 3com would give up the useless Palm VII "web clipping" crippled wireless networking design and spend the time on more interesting features.
    I'd rather have to hook a palm to a cell phone and have more memory and colour than have wireless data from a handful of American companies. No offense to the Americans who might find that useful, but I could care less what ABC.com, ESPN and Moviefon have to say... even if I could get access to it here.

    Within a week of the iMac release www.usbstuff.com started carrying iMac coloured one button mice and iMac coloured mac keyboards I thought to myself Why on earth would someone need a replacement mouse and keyboard for a machine they just bought last week, these companies should be making something useful... then I looked at an iMac in the store and understood completely.

    There is so much hype that Starwars better not fumble that one, any cuteness like the fuzzy zeewoks in this one and I start shooting people in the theater.

    I guess i'd better buy some body armour for the opening night then. (preferably something more durable than stormtrooper armour :)
