  1. Re:Yawn... on CBS Sees no Journalism in Blogs · · Score: 1

One of many things of which I was thinking when I posted. The "regular" media have long guessed at election results. I guess the difference between them getting it wrong and the bloggers getting it wrong is that the former are "journalists".

  2. Yawn... on CBS Sees no Journalism in Blogs · · Score: 1

Wow, some bloggers said Kerry would win the election, but they were wrong and are therefore not real journalists. I'll bet no major news organization ever made the mistake of wrongly guessing what would happen in an election. Undoubtedly, the bloggers will fold up their tents now that this esteemed personage has informed them that they are not in fact journalist.

I know that I'm dating myself here, but arcades haven't been the same since the demise of pinball. I stopped going into arcades when I realized that everyone in the joint was giving me the hairy eyeball because I was some weirdo who wanted to play the lone analog game in the place.

First, if you're mad because you can't rip your SACD to an mp3 to listen to, then you're totally missing the point. Go buy a CD for that, it'll rip just fine, you can listen to it on your iPod, and everyone is happy.

What if I want to listen to a high-quality recording in my home *and* have a mp3 copy on my laptop?

  7. Same thing but not even my domain on Verisign Sending Deceptive Domain Renewal Mail? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I got the same letter from VeriSign, but it was for renewal of a domain that I do not and never have owned. The domain turned out to be registered to some company in Turkey who used register.com. I'm somewhat concerned that other people are getting the same letter for *my* domains.

I'm in A^2 also. I've had one major problem with the switchover: for a little more than 24 hours something was wrong with one of Comcast's DNS servers which effectly made it impossible to do anything on the web. I solved the problem by just specifying a different server but the average user wouldn't have been able to use that work around. I also don't use them for an email provider (switching your email account with no warning is unforgivable IMO) and I never installed any of their crappy software on my machine - I instead choose to run the cable modem straight to my router. I have a friend who has had plenty of problems though.

Worst of all was their complete failure to keep their customers informed. My friend send them an email concerning his problems. After 10 days they sent him a auto-reply that said that they weren't going to answer his question. That's all. No acknowledgement that a problem existed, no general description, no helpful hints, nothing. I still haven't received anything from them other than glossy throwaways telling me how great their service is.

  10. junkbuster on Web Bug Detector · · Score: 1

I use Junkbuster for all my filtering needs. I've got a long list of stuff that gets killed automatically including lots and lots of webbugs. It's easy to maintain - all I do is occasionally look through my cache and plonk anything I don't like. An added benefit, at least back when I was dialing up, was the increased page load speed because I didn't have to wait for banners and counter gifs and so forth.

  11. Re:Abstinence makes the biparties grow stronger... on Messages From Democracy's Ghosts · · Score: 1

Personally, I think the best thing that can happen is that power is fragmented more ways. I live in Minnesota, where the Independant Jesse Ventura controls the executive branch, the Republicans control the senate, and the Democrats control the house. For me, it's perfect. Getting three distinct groups to align is even harder than getting two groups to agree, which means less gets done. In my book, the fewer laws that get passed mean the least amount of damage done.

OTOH, I specifically want one party to control the government. When it comes time for the electorate to assess the government's performance at election time voters can easily determine that the government has or has not done the job voters wanted it to do (and throw da bums out if they haven't). With power being highly fragmented it's easy for each party to lay blame for the government's failings on the other party and sufficiently confuse the electorate to the point where no one can make a clear choice.
