Yes, you're right, unfortunately that is the way it often works. My supervisor once sent in a research proposal, and one of the referees had as comment: he's good, so it must be a good proposal. Totally ridiculous of course... OTOH, if you keep on publishing crappy papers people will also recognise you and avoid you, so the truly astonishing masterpiece that you published by accident will then never be cited.
Is her name on the paper? Then she has nothing to complain about. She isn't known in the scientific community that she tries to establish herself in yet. The professor is; that's why he gets the credit. If she published more good quality work in the same field she will eventually be recognized.
I know at least one person who did exactly that. She needed a new engine in her BMW, which knocked fairly big dent in her wallet. But we have learned that cars have to go to the garage every now and then to prevent that sort of problems. Why shouldn't computer users be trained to bring their machines to the `garage' to bring them up-to-date and destroy viruses on them? We should learn them that computers, like cars, are complicated machines and need maintenance. When will the `you can start working directly' crap many computer manufacturers preach ever stop?
It might have something to do with interference of the monitor with the light coming from TL-tubes. Then again, I get raving mad from a monitor flickering at 60Hz in a room that is lit by sunlight.
They don't have to present facts of features for IE7. MS will have done what they do best: copy all nice features FF has over IE and if possible improve them. They WILL kill FF on the Windows platform with IE7. Luckily there are two other platforms on which FF is big, but unfortunately these platforms have a negligible user base. SO the Mozilla team has to come with some really great new features really fast for the next version of FireFox to have a chance of overthrowing IE.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. It's such a pain to see the wonderful OS Apple made topped off with the useless piece of crap Aqua is. The guy I bought my second-hand iMac from insisted in showing me that it worked. He had OS9 installed on it, which to me looks like it had a lot more user-friendly interface than Aqua is.
Well well well. I wonder how much she got paid for that. Interesting article; I even learned a few things about Aqua. It's a pity that the article was all about GUI's though. I'm sure you can make an Aqua-clone for Windows or Linux. But I feel more productive with Linux or OS-X because they are so much more flexible than the Windows OS. And I'm not even a programmer, just a nerd who likes computers. With Linux or OS-X you can get the OS to do what YOU want, not what some pointy-hair in Redmond thinks is good for you.
A good UI should be infinitely configurable. A good example of what I think is a very bad UI is Aqua, the famous OS-X interface. It's even worse than the Windows interface. Look through how much trouble you must go to make a black background! And I'm not even talking about window behaviour etc. The Windows interface is a bit better, but the one I like best is fvwm2. It takes quite some time to figure out how the configuration file but then you can do absolutely everything.
I have no idea what the resolution of a human eye is. My doctor told me I have good retina's, which means I can see an aful lot of detail, but how many receptor cells I use for that, I have no idea.
I've used Sunbird for Linux for a while now and I must say it's fairly good. There are a lot of bugs of course but it's usable and I like it. But that's also because I didn't try anything else. Because I have a Mac, Xp, and Linux I love all Mozilla stuff because it runs on all those platforms almost exactly the same.
If I buy her CD's I get crap music, not the pretty pictures that go with it on the telly. So I wonder why people buy these CD's. Maybe it's because I'm getting old.

My favorite illustration is the one they put in the Photonic Crystals section. Brilliant, that one.
It is extremely annoying that I only get Dutch websites from MSN, but even then the result is very interesting. Apparently MSN doesn't like Mr. Gates very much.
No. A few things after a search on 'Linux': 1. I live in Holland. MSN thinks I only speak Dutch, since most of the websites it returns are in Dutch, and I DIDN'T indicate that I only wanted results in Dutch. When I clicked Search at the page that contained the results, I got exactly the same. 2. www.linux.org was nowhere in the results page, though www.debian.org was. 3. I find it scary that one of the first links it showed was a link to the story that MS thinks Linux' safety is a myth.
I think the results Google came up with (the first link was www.linux.org, and even www.kernel.org was on the first results page) make much more sense.
Five years ago, when Linux was suddenly on the uprise, they came with more or less the same arguments. Strange that they didn't think of any new ones to spread FUD about Linux.

Good point. Why should anyone try to win 50k$ if it costs more to get a chance to win that prize?
Amazing, a two-button mouse! And we thought Microsoft was innovative.

If you have problems with crashes you should try to remove all plugins and only install the ones you need. That helped me a lot.

Can you tell me which page that is because I never saw popups with Firefox, not even on porn-sites.
Hey, that's cool, if you say Aqua is bad you instantly get modded down 'Troll'. Apple freaks :-)

The ASR chip contains approximately 5,000 microscopic solar cells that convert light into electrical impulses.
5000 cells, that's an area of 70x70 cells. Is that enough to see with or am I missing something?
I haven't tried version 0.2 yet but the earlier versions you could just unpack and then run the executable. Maybe you can try that.

I guess you're younger than me. Kids these days ;-)
