I think it's a bit of both actually. I recently installed Debian 3.1 and I've been trying to get everything working for two weeks now, and I still can't burn CD's... I've been using Slackware for the last ten years, and the learning curve to a different distibution is steeper than I thought. I also have two Macs at home and I love them more and more, I must say. But that is also because thanks to my Linux experience I can really exploit the Unix-like OS and have it do whatever strange thing I want. OSX is great!
How about: - the ability to give my windows, background etc. all the possible colors instead of having to choose between a few
Maybe I'm confused but you can do this. Choose Edit->View Options (cmd-j), click 'color' at the bottom, click the color patch and your presented with a range of options for setting the window color.
But that's only a few colors. And my favorite color (black) isn't even among them. Windows lets you use any color you want.
- a utility with which you can choose the standard application for certain file types/processes
The utility is the OS. Click on a file, choose File->Get Info (cmd-i), choose an application under 'Open with', then click 'Change All...' to apply the change to all files of that type.
That I knew, but for instance when you have Safari and Firefox installed, and you click on a link that was sent to you by e-mail (whilst you view it in your mail application), it will open in Safari and the only thing you can do about it is remove Safari from the system. If there is another way I would like to hear it.

Yes, they are small things, but small things are often the ones that annoy us the most, because you keep seeing them.
I agree with you on all that, but there is no proof for the claim that 400k Windows users have switched. It could very well be that a lot of the buyers of new Macs are former Linux users, who finally have a system that is very good and/really\ desktop-ready.
I think the 'especially if security improves' says it all. MS promises a lot in this area, and I really wonder why they still seem to find eye-candy more important than security issues. With Longhorn they have a chance to do everything better, but no, it seems like the only thing that's better is the looks. But then why isn't Longhorn out yet? Is it so hard to make a transparant-looking interface? Hopefully they are working hard on those security issues now.
I read somewhere on/. that you can also press the shift key during startup. It then skips all the plugins and loads in the blink of an eye. The amazing thing is that I don't find it any less usable without all these plugins.
You see? Another security fault in an open sores program. This is what you get if you don't pay your developers. Opening the source so that everyone can see the flaws is just asking for trouble. I'm going back to IE.
More Star Wars movies will increase the chance of them entering the history books, with the comment: most of them were crap, but some of them were good. Now, fortunately, most of them are good (I haven't seen the last one yet, but part I and II have gotten so much feedback, both positive and negative, that it must be good). It will be extremely hard to keep the quality this high, so let's enjoy what we've got and , if people must make new movies, let them be about something entirely different, and preferably as original as the first SW movies were in the late '70s.
I bet it won't be long before IE has other innovative features like plugins, and an ability to surf without leaving traces on your computer. This is a good thing, because it keeps the competition fierce. What other great features can we expect in Safari, Firefox and IE in the future? I'm looking forward to them!
This is a very interseting development. But 0.2 mW is not nearly enough to power an artificial heart. Does anyone have an idea how much power a heart needs to keep someone alive and happy? I think you need quite a lot of these coin-sized fuel cells for that...
But the device may one day become a cheaper and more precise way to screen airport baggage or to propel small spacecraft, say the device's creators.
If someone claims two applications of a new technology that are so exteremly unrelated to each other in one sentence I find it hard to take him/her serious. But hey, maybe it can be used to propel a car, cheaply and environmentally friendly.

I can't even play the video on my Mac!
Fantastic picture on this web site! Is it there yet? Nope, I still can't see it. Not even on the horizon...
I've been waiting for a desktop-ready Linux version that you can use out of the box for ten years now. Finally it's there, and it's called Mac OSX!

What is this number based on? Looks like they are just pulling numbers out of thin air.
Yeah. I just got mine last week, and now I hear next week it'll be totally useless. Way to go Apple!
Wow, I haven't seen an article this biased in a long time. This is not journalism, this is flaming.

LOL, that's funny. Why are you rated Insightful? ;-)
Funny, I thought exactly the same thing.
Some people will call this a downgrade.

I can "take notes" with my left hand as well as with my right.

There is no virtual reality.

Actually, they are a lot cheaper. Of course it depends on how pure you want them, but for example look here. Around $60 a gram!
That's an easy way to get your Karma up! ;-)
