  1. hmm this post sounds familiar? on Napster Clawing Back · · Score: 1

hehe.... maybe I just have a good memory, but I think you've posted this exact comment before :)

A lot of luxory cars have that, actually. If the airbags deploy and there is no driver response, they send out a distress signal via GPS

  3. Re:I thought you meant Washington D.C... on Fiber Optics Come To Rural Washington · · Score: 1

Road Runner should be out there by Dulles. The Road Runner HQ is in Herndon (of course, there are still parts of herndon that can't get it). But the area you're talking about is covered I think.

I go to Tech, and live right in blacksburg. Adelphia is FINALLY moving to two way cable modems, they have three crews in blacksburg working on it right now. Is your cable company still adelphia, or is it something else because of that rural cooprative thing? It sounds like adelphia is really trying to upgrade their network.

  5. Re:Okay, on U.S. OKs VeriSign Domain Deal · · Score: 1

I don't know about that. I have a hard time believing the government can do anything more efficiently than the private sector. The registrars compete now, customer service should improve for all of them. As was mentioned in another post, the regestry is the only thing Verisign has a monopoly on, and from what I know the regestry has been working ok. Government is not always the best answer to everything.

  6. Re:Information wants to be free on Technology vs. Cheating at the University of Virginia · · Score: 1

I think he's got a point though. Yeah, he may not have said it the best way, but what he said makes sense. So long as information is free to be copied and people can paraphrase, you can always cheat. When you think about it, there's lots of information I hope will never be free. Health records, bank information, dirty letters to my girlfriend, etc. If these things can't be protected somehow, that's a problem.

Wouldn't Dennis Titto have the altitude record for a private citizen now though?

I got into music around 1993. What did HFS used to be like? It would be nice to have a station in D.C. that played good classic rock, I don't know what the hell 94.7 turned into. Last I listened to it, it was all hippie music.

  9. I think I missed something on Scientology vs. Panoussis Ruling · · Score: 1

I've seen a lot of the phrase "all your [word] are belong to us!" I think I missed where this came from and why it's funny, and I've seen it a lot now, anyone care to explain it? :)

  10. Isn't this good too? on More Napster Than You Can Shake A Copy-Protected MP3 At · · Score: 1

Isn't everyone always saying how napster can provide a legitimate service to swap non-commercial MP3's? If all the copyrighted MP3's are removed (yes it's going to be hard to do, but humor me here) then napster becomes 100% legitimate, and this whole mess can pass. Why people are so concerned with our "right" to download copyrighted music is way beyond me. No one here argues that windows should be free because we have linux. But when it comes to music, for some reason it should all be free. Can someone please help me understand that view?

  12. Why single out NSI? on Naughty Words in Domains · · Score: 1

NSI isn't holding back anyone's freedom. No one forces you to use them. They can ban the word "cow" if they feel like it, it's their system. They have competition now, so if there is demand to regester the word fuck, someone else will do it.

  13. Re:Mr. Hatch doesn't like being a patsy... on Sen. Hatch Warns Labels: Don't Make Me Come Spank You · · Score: 1

Every time a MP3 article comes up on slashdot, I always hear that the music industry needs to come up with "new business models". We rarely hear any suggestions that make any sense, or actually make sure the artist gets paid. Voluntary pay systems aren't going to cut it. I don't have the answers either, but why do we assume it's only the record company's responsibility to come up with a new business model? Can anyone think of a system that would actually work? Is it really a bad thing for artists to make money only by selling music, without having to sell T-shirts or concerts or whatever?

AdSubtract (www.intermute.com) can be setup to filter popups while leaving legit javascript pretty much unaffected. I've been using it for a while now, it ROCKS!
